'77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Calling it Done (for now...)

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Rear Wheel Done

One thing... my new springs don't look like the older ones. That is, the OEM springs have one end where the coils are closer together than the other end. Obviously, on these new springs, the coils are equidistant. Presumably, it doesn't matter which way they go in?

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Rear Wheel Done

No marks on either end? If not then I would just put them in however.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Rear Wheel Done

Another new engine toy in the mail yesterday.

Some stainless steel stacks from Steel Dragon Performance. In typical fashion, I placed my order the day before joey posts about possibly making some for sale. Still, the quality on these looks pretty good to me. We'll see how they perform.

I pick up my cylinders from the machinist today at lunch, so that should be the last I need to get the engine back together.

Looking Great Sonreir!! Such a cool project. The Velo's are very nice.

Nice! I just saw on their site they make stacks in brass now. Always after I order. ::)

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Rear Wheel Done

I talked to them about getting brass before I "settled" for the stainless. It was a bit rich for my blood. A bit over $250 for the pair for the specs I wanted. The stainless were $65 + shipping.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Rear Wheel Done

 I suppose "call for prices" should have been a clue. Wow. Well, I'm happy with mine too. Hah

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Rear Wheel Done

Hahaha... totally. I should have known by now... if I have to ask for the price, I can't afford it.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Rear Wheel Done

Looks real cool but the mesh in stacks does nothing for performance and doesn't even keep out anything that's going to wear out motor. (other than small children ;D )
If you look up mesh screen, it usually tells you how much surface area per square inch the 'wire' takes up, finer the screen, more restriction so you need even more area to maintain flow rate.
A much better screen is a cone pointing out from carb intake

more reasonable than i expected

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Rear Wheel Done

really the only thing the screen may do is prevent road stone from flinging through the carb and into the head.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Reassembly Started

A bit more done this weekend. I trued the wheels (easier than I thought!) and started reassembling the front end. I also tested the fit of the stacks onto the carbs and all is good there. Finally, I managed to get a bit of paint down onto the rocker cover in anticipation of getting this engine back together.

I was hoping to get a lot more done, but Easter threw a spanner into the works... That, and it took my literally three hours of tinkering to get the AllBalls bearings to fit properly. It turns out I had forgotten to remove one of the OEM spacers from the bottom of the neck...

Test fitting the stacks on the carbs and all is good. I'll need to shim them a bit if/when I remove the screens though.

Put down some paint onto the rocker cover in prep for engine reassembly.

Front end mostly reassembled with the bars in place for mock up.

Thanks, pj. I was wondering about that, myself. I know the stacks are there to smooth the flow going into the carbs and the screens (especially when placed right in front of the venturi) seemed to defeat that purpose...

Any tips on keeping my engine alive when running without filters/screens? Oil changes more often or something along those lines?

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Reassembly Started

Stay off dirt roads, stay out of the rain, and run a rear fender or at least make a shield for carbs so the tire can't throw rocks in. Other than that I would just make sure you keep the oil changed. AS long as you are messing around on good clean roads, I would guess a filter wouldn't make much difference other than added back pressure.

The gold looks sweet man, she's sure gonna be a looker. ;D

Nothing really, keep an eye on valve clearance and check very regular, the seats will wear at about same rate as rings.
New rings at least every 5,000miles, you can probably get 3 sets of rings before you need to change piston.
oil every 1200 miles max
I have open intakes on 2 of my 360's, both smoke pretty bad on one cylinder so it's not wear yet, probably just valve guide seals
If you want to fit mesh cones, I know I've seen them somewhere, possibly Bed, Bath & Beyond, no idea what they are used for (wife was dragging me round showing me 'stuff', she probably feels the same when I show her bike parts ;D )

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - They See Me Rollin'

Rolling frame. Need I say more?
