79 CB750K, RCB clone-ish build

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

Mr. B. Rat, dunno if you can tell but though you're getting pinged on a lit, everyone is really looking out for your best interests. You're cutting your own throat jumping around thematically like you have been.
You're working with a badass bike anyway, build it like an 80's superbike but with clip ons adn some rear sets. It'll look killer, handle well, fit like it should etc etc.

Find yourself something next that you can put that tank and seat on. You'll be happier that way, seriously man. This *IS* your first build right?

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

Holey shit, I was just joking about going back to the dunstall.

yes Hilsy, I didn't say which bike it could go with.

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

I like the red tail a little better. I just like the shape better. Cool inspiration pics def something to shoot for. Keep it up.

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

I agree, that red tail is cut out a bit for twin shocks. My TZ tail is for a single shocker, but could be trimmed to give the same basic shape....it is fiberglass afterall LOL.

Hey.....I have the greatest idea EVER.....Sell me the Dunstall tank for my next project and I`ll keep my TZ tail to match it.

Cant blame me for trying, that tank is bitchin.....but not on a DOHC 750 LOL.

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

I could trim the blue one no problem even add if I want. I was looking at one from air tech, very trimable:

but as soon as m357 gets back to me with some more pictures and dimensions...

Waiting for some paint on my clips to dry, Need to find the tool to open the top of my forks to add oil.

Anyone recommend a fender? http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/vintage/vintagefendersstreet.htm

Where the hell is this leak coming from?

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

Airtech's stuff is kinda pricey. I have to ask - what about RocCity or GFTP?

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

Seans doing my tank but he doesn't have any seats in the style required.

Who is GFTP?

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

Actually - Glass from the Past. I can't remember the web address but it will show up if you google it. real nice guy to work with

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

I checked out that site doesn't look like they have what you need. I really think that red looks like the ones from your inspiration pics. That kinda boattail with a number plate. The oil leak looks like a possible valve cover gasket leak.Keep it up.

More than likely it is from your cam chain tensioner at the rear of the motor (under the carbs). A lot of 4 cyl motors leak from the tensioner area and the oil runs through to the front and looks like a leak from somewhere else. Either that or from the cyl base gasket.

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

The leak definitely looks like it's biased to one side, I think Hillsy is onto something. My vote is cyl base gasket.

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

PM sent with more pic's and measurements of the tail....it is a boat tail style, narrows alot to the rear ( about 3" wide at the tip )

Let me know what you think, either way, it can still go on my T500 so no big deal if ya change your mind 8)

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

I guess after looking at 357's seat it work too maybe its the long sides that through me off at first but that can be fixed. i guess either one would fit the bill.

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

Ok, Yes, there would be gussets on the sides welded to the square stock BUT, in a configuration like this (with angle iron attachment points for the upper mount) would there be too much torsion on the support? Would it be best to mount the square stock on line with the shock?

I also have enough "angle iron" to do just about the same thing as the square, I could also weld the tabs for the bolt inside the angle iron and use just that.

All those in favor say Yay, All those opposed say Nae.

I'm going to check those numbers for m357's seat shortly.

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

Can that tube be welded in between the frame rails. that would look better. Then weld up a "box" for the shock. More pics might help.

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

Have you figured any geometry, or do you just plan to stick it where it "looks" good/right and pray to the mono Gods that it will ride and respond to stimulus well?

Re: 79 CB750K, Bol d 'Or RCB inspired build

No math for me but some research.

The shock Im using is from a Honda ST1300:

hondast1300sf2.jpg

The geometry is very similar to what I'm playing with. Its not like trying to mount the shock pure vertical or horizontal.

The 1300 weighs 640#, my CB750 weighs about 530# stock. and I weigh about 220#. So, it will be a little stiffer but very rideable.

Not bad I think.
