Hey guys... I went to the brit bike guru and this is what happened. He had one dunstall muffler that I was looking for, an original that looks like its been around for a few years. He let me take it for moc up purposes. I asked if he had a swing arm from a like bike I could use to chop and extend. he said no but he had a suzuki one... what the hell, il see if i can make any of that work...
I think ive opened a can of worms...
Now it makes my shocks look like tooth picks and my tire looks real skinny... motocross style.
Now, the swing arm is obviously in upside down to keep the lever out of the way. I need to file/ grind down some flanges at the back of the engine to make it fit in all the way. Right now there is about 1/8" to 1/4" of lip stopping it from aligning and letting the bolt go through.
Are there spring set ups what work on a tension principal instead of compression? then i could save the welding and fix it to my center stand bolt.
You've got to understand here, I cant weld on the frame of the bike.. nothing structural. in my line of work i can move a lot and that means safeties. cant safety a chopper/ custom welded bike.
Ok, Im thinking about using both of my old shocks in the "mono" configuration mounted on the stock swing arm location and to somewhere near under the rear of the tank. This means re locating my electronics, loosing the plastic fender, and something a little more exotic. after work tomorrow im flipping the swing arm to standard configuration to mess with some more ideas and shock mounting locations.
If you go mono there is alot to consider. Those shocks weren't meant to work in a mono configuration. If it was me I would use them just as they were meant to. Just weld some tabs on the swingarm and run duals. Especially if you don't or can't weld on your frame. It would be the easiest way. It would also look more old school to match your tank.
Turns out that the Suzuki swing arm is only 1" longer at full extention... To some guys an extra inch is enough... I have an ebay 750 swing arm in the mail as you read this. I will attempt to extend it about 4" at this conceptual point in time. I will still have my stock one should I decide to go running back home as seems to be the theme of this post...
I do like the new idea for the rear suspension. I can strengthen the gussets at the top and turn a nice big bolt on the lathe for the shocks to mount. Dont worry, I wont use these shicos. I will buy stronger. I just love how they look with everything in the end... Yes... the tank...
possible stroke ;D Don't know what youre thinkin. Are you thinking of ditching the foam and using that part of the tail as the seat or what. Might be easier than shaping the foam. dunno
Im thinkin its my favorite incarnation less the chrome rear fender. Yes, I am contemplating chopping most of the foam off and using a the stock tail or like it with a different tail light system a little lower so that the bottom of the tail just covers the frame rails.
Now, eye to eye distance is pretty shit simple and I want two... What would I want for shocks other than that?
What about the battery now?
Even looking at the picture here it looks much better standing next to it... trust me? better than before?
I'm putting in "The worlds fastest Indian" gonna think about the bike for a bit.
You'll need stiffer shocks. as your rear wheel has more leverage over the shocks in that configuration. If it were me and I was gonna go mono I would either do a single shock with a linkage or a single shock triangulated like gretta or an under slung shock. I still think with that tank old school tank i would rock two outboard shocks.
Ok guys. If there's no contest, I may just drop these updates down to a weekly thing or more whenever I do anything half arsed significant.
I had some down time cleaning the aluminum swing arm so I painted my sprocket and cleaned the drive bump thing on the rim Il probably paint it again, I know the chain is going to chew off the paint in the first 10 ft. I mocked up my shocks on the swing arm with the pivot removed. I like it. I've contacted Progressive Suspension about what I'm doing and asked what kind of shocks would work best for my application. I gave them my bike information, my height and weight so lets see what they cant come up with.
Im even thinking about chopping my tail like thompson here. If I ever need to, I can just swap everything over to a new frame and rebuild. I dont know...
Did you say youre thinking of cutting the subframe off like I did. Haha. If you did it would mke your life easier. I basically had a similar problem with the tank and seat alignment. So I cut mine off so I could move the subframe up. Now when I decided to do this I was gonna use the original subframe just straighten the top tubes and then notch the ends and weld them to the bike. But then I decided that it would be easier to mount tabs and mount a db subframe which already had straght top rails. But like I say it would keep you from having to make those panels and in my honest opinion making a jigsaw puzzle to quote another member. So with all that said you may want to consider it.
you mean extend the frame rails from under the tank and have the bottom of the seat level with the bottom of the tank? that would be easier. I'l think about it and anything else I can.
To be honest I like the concept with the dual shocks mounted under the seat. I know that a mono shock would be easier but there is already a couple of those here. Not knocking them but I like a little variety
Nice vintage pics, thanks for posting them, really like the look of that silver tanked 750's velocity stacks...mmm...velocity *drools*.
Anwyho, why do you want to lengthen your swingarm? I know some reasons people do it, but I'm curious as to what you're hoping to gain by doing it on this build.
Cant wait to see how this turns out. This was my last bike and from all the parts left over Ive put together another 750f. Would love to try a cafe style on it.
I wanted to do it more for the show aspect of it more than anything. I live in a town of 15,000 and in the prairies to boot. Corner carving is not a priority. If it was, the roads are full of pot holes and half the back allies in town are still dirt.
