Oh yeah way too cold to be overheating. I use a "Gunson Colortune" to set the mixture, it takes alot of guesswork out. also if you fiddle with the airscrews you may want sync the carbs again as the intake volume has changed slightly.
BTW that Pingle is sweet! I have been working on a friends 650B2 and the PO cobbled up some adapter and a petcock that has the spigot on the wrong direction. the fuel line routing sucks. maybe i can convince him to get that pingle setup.
Dude! I just watched this video and this device is cool a shit! Why have I not heard of this before. Seems like a good investment. Thanks for sharing.

The pingel is the way to go. I put one on my zrx and I love it. You just can't forget to leave the fuel on when the bike sits and it's also good idea to ensure you have a good set of float needle seats.

Float needles...yeah that will be the next upgrade. I have a feeling that the needles might be causing my idle to fluctuate just a tad. Not sure if a bad needle would cause that.

My comment about the float needles was more about making sure they close correctly so if the fuel is left on too long, gas doesn't overflow the bowls and possibly drain down into the intakes, cylinders, etc.... that would be a bad thing for that pretty little engine you just rebuilt.
Installed the Pingel Petcock. Not quite plug and play. Adapter plate holes were a little off. Had to modify. Also have to slightly open up fuel tap slot on tank. After that everything worked fine.
The tap itself is quality but very easy to accident flip on and off if your handing install or removal of tank.
Tested my coils. All is good except plug caps. All are the same except you can tell one was replace. It has a different amount of resistance on one cap. Probably a smart idea for me to replace them all.
Working on making a new vin tag. My first idea is to goto FedEx Kinkos to see if they can print this on a non fade laminate adhesive. Perhaps one knows a better place to get this printed?
Private msg me if you want the photoshop template.
Hey! Just read through all of this! Really solid work! I was able to snag some new old stock 62mm kz pistons and rings, so I'l be sticking with those, but the wiseco kit was my backup option!
Really cool to see this come together! It sounds awesome with the kerker exhaust. Now all you need is a set of the CR29 carbs and you're full race bike!

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Engine running better with each adjustment
Re-synced carbs this last week. My logic was off but i assumed since the carbs were synced when i pulled them off the bike to rebuild that they would be in sync when i put them back on. I was wrong.
Carb syncing 4 cylinders was a little bit more tricky than a twin. It required small back and forth tweaks to get them all set evenly.
After that I broke out the Colortune. Neat little tool but hard to see on a bright day. Didn't see much variation in my flame (Bunson Blue), but i did notice the spark having a more consistent beat/rhythm when dialing it in. To lean or rich caused inconsistent spark.
I'm going to revisit the colortune and set the mixture screw separately for each carb.
Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Engine running better with each adjustment
How I use it is I intentionally set it rich so I can see orange combustion. Then lean it out until I see it turn white which is neutral and then a tiny bit past until it's blue. You will probably want to resync after

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Engine running better with each adjustment
Took the bike out for it's first major ride. 50 miles from my parents garage to my shared garage in Philadelphia. 65 degree day. Ran beautifully. Idle dropped a little in slow moving stop and go city traffic but no major signs of overheating. Upped the idle a tad to compensate and everything was fine.
I'll work on getting some solid riding video in the next week or two.

Took her out again these last few evenings. Man does this bike go. The gearing on the sprockets is perfect. 17/42 I believe. Without going over 4500-5k rpm before break in I was able to jump on the highway for a little and she accelerated hard even at 70mph. She can do 70 with only 4500-5k on the tach.
