All Illinois/Chicago/General Area people sign in here !!

New member here from Naperville with a 72 CL450, you can see my thread in Member Introductions. Hoping to make it out to a few meets this summer, but in the meantime there's a few things I need to do to make sure the bike is safe and reliable. Anybody got some good shop recommendations near me? I'm hoping for a shop with knowledgeable people, decent prices, and most importantly careful handling of customers' bikes. Is Naperville Motorsports any good? Thanks in advance for your advice guys.

the problem you will run into is not so much the shop, but finding a shop that will work on a vintage bike like that... i would sugest you bring it by my shop but we are booked out though next week...

For the moment I'm just looking for a drive chain replacement, which I'm sure any shop will do. I know, I know, I could do it myself if I wanted to. But with something so vital to the bike's drivetrain I'd rather be safe, especially if I can get it done for a reasonable sum. I'd hate to mess something up (like how hard to rivet the master link) and have the chain snap on me at high speed. Not likely, but still possible.

man to be 100% honest very few shops will touch bikes from 85 back. due to liability with older bikes. where are you located i am sure i can give you a hand with a chain replacement it is really easy to do. just remove one and pull the next one though. pop in the link and your done... do you have the new chain?

im new to the area were is crete ? we have got to get something together here on the south side

umm easiest way to explain it is. take 80/94 east to 394 south for about 10 mins and wah lah. it takes me about 30 mins to get to orland mall so its not bad at all. and i totally agree on getting some people together. theres been to many nice days to ride and too few people to ride with

Joe, I might take you up on that. I'd rather have a hand in it myself and do it in an hour than drop it off and pick it up days later from someone I don't know. You work at a shop? Where?

Hey Joe!

I grew up in Elgin, and I have a lot of family in town. BSully (he posted earlier on this thread) happens to be a buddy of mine - Great guy. Even though I moved down to Atlanta a year ago, its great to see a Cafe/Bobber presence in the western burbs. I don't remember ever seeing a cafe in town while I was there (22 years), but I hope you can rekindle the Cafe scene there. If I'm ever up there for a visit, I'll have to stop by and check out your shop!! Keep up the good work.

What about mirrors - are they required by law in IL and if so two or just one. Joe, did you mean horizontal or vertical for the plate - mine are closer to 45 degrees.

mirrors are not req in IL to my knowledge... i know on the plates the horrizontal is no joke i had a vertical side mount for about a week and got popped about 5 times... not worth it

I thought you meant that it had to be dead straight in a vertical plane. Of course you actually meant it had to be horizontal and not mounted on its side on a shock. Duh.

The mirror thing is a PIA though - no where to mount one - I'll work it out. Not rocket science.

Interesting that exhausts cannot be modified to make more noise than the original equipment. No straight pipes in IL then. I guess they don't enforce that one too often.

out of 6 bikes i have one with a plate light... IL has reflective plates no on will ever know you dont have it lit up if it is night

Just figured I'd introduce myself.

1. Tony
2. Oak Park (close to chicago as you can get)
3. 1978 Honda CB550K
4. I think being a motorcyclist/rider is part of a club.

Been doing network/systems admin stuff for a long time, looking for a new project that has nothing to do with computers. I think I've found it. Been slowly collecting parts and trying to finish up our house renovation then I can get started on the bike. Can't wait.
