i need help with something anyone know a bout electrical for a cb750 my main fuse blows immediatly upon pressing the push start everytime i replace with 20 amp just keeps blowing the fuse

You have a dead short in the starter circuit. Disconnect the lead from the starter button to the relay and see if that stops teh fuse from blowing. If so, move on to test the relay and the starter motor itself.

Just figured I'd introduce myself.

4. I think being a motorcyclist/rider is part of a club.

Been doing network/systems admin stuff for a long time, looking for a new project that has nothing to do with computers. I think I've found it. Been slowly collecting parts and trying to finish up our house renovation then I can get started on the bike. Can't wait.

Tony, take your time to get it running sweetly first and ride it for a while to get a feeling for what works for you and what needs upgrading/replacing. While that is happening, you have time to do a ton of research and make a plan. It doesn't need to be "a build" but can be a simple upgrade to parts that need it.

as said above it is grounded out if it is shorting out like that, going up in fuses only risks a fire

As the topic states, if you are in/and/or around the Chicago-Illinois area make yourself known !

1. Name
Savas

2. Location (specific of course)
Northern Illinois, but my dad lives in Mt. Prospect

3. Rides (Don't forget the pics..)
None yet, definitely looking to get a Honda CB though I've heard great things about Suzuki GS750's

4. Club Affilation (if any)
none

5. Etc
New rider, 19 years old, LOVE the cafe racer style. I love to tinker and I'm a mechanical engineering major. Can't wait to get started on a new project! If anyone knows of any Honda CB's for sale (that aren't on craigslist, I check four to five times a day) let me know! Great to be part of the board!

Also a ME/Physics major myself...fourth year though. What school?

I'm sure a lot of guys on here may tell you the same thing I will...if this is your first bike, don't throw out the idea of going a little smaller than 750. I almost got one myself but CB750s are around 500lb bikes, and while they are not unmanageable, they are definitely tougher to handle than a 450 (especially in the cone weave, if you haven't gotten that out of the way already). The power can also be a little scary if you're not used to the acceleration of a motorcycle. If you're a bigger guy (180+) or are confident riding a bike, go ahead. Just saying, I'm a new rider myself at about 150lbs and my 450 has the perfect amount of power for me. It's super fun to ride, gets up and goes quick (though I haven't even pushed it hard yet), but has never accelerated fast enough to scare the shit out of me.

There's a really nice CB400 for sale on CL right now and the asking price is great...I'd seriously consider it. I've ridden one and they are beasts...between 6k and 9k rpm they HOWL. Anyway, there are plenty of guys out there whose first bikes were 750s and they managed just fine. Just giving you some (hopefully) helpful advice. Good luck on the bike search regardless, hope to see you on one soon!

appreciate the advice! I'm going to scour craigslist for that 400 youre talking about, over the past couple days ive come to the conclusion that a 750 IS too much for me. and i go to NIU btw.

well found out i have no problems kick starting her up and is running fine but as soon as i hit that start button there goes my main fuse not sure why ...

Sounds like a short somewhere. The push start is just connecting 2 wires. Get yourself a wiring diagram and check everything over with a fine tooth comb.

Typed with thumbs - don't judge.

Maybe your push button is grounded, causing the fuse to blow. Eliminate the push button and try starting it by connecting the two wires for a second, emulating the functionality of the button.

If it still blows, trace the wires down.

When I ran my wires through my drag bars I had the same problem when hitting my headlight switch. I had pinched one of the wires when tightening my controls back on, grounded the thing out. Opticz is right- you need to get a wiring diagram and multimeter and trace the short back to where it is, then fix it. It's not fun work, but you gotta do it...

teazer,
Thanks for the advice. The bike doesn't run now so I have been doing things to set up trying to get it started. My plan is once I can get her running I can start working on the looks. So far I have checked the electrics and I am about to open up the carbs to take a look. The bike has been sitting for god knows how long, gas inside the tank was horrible smelling. It's been a blast so far.
