Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

shit! ok Im gonna have to mspaint what I mean just to redeem myself! It would be a stripe ending in a point, so it wouldnt look like a thong, I promise!

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

To my design team, Thank you, thank you, thank you! I really couldn't do this with out you. Honestly! I have to say, it looks better in person than it does in the photos. I've been like a little kid. Haven't been this stoked in a long, long time!
Funny thing is a couple of friends came by and said that if they had to pick 'my' bike out of a line up of 1,000 bikes this would be it. Pretty cool. Guess we are on the right track! This thing kinda feels like it's a tattoo!
I agree totally with what everyone is saying. Kanticoy is sending me a new bucket so that will get painted and put on. Not sure if if will be black or tank color. I'll try paints on my crappy one first. However, I hope the bike is on the road by the time it gets here. Should be easy to paint and swap out once it arrives.
I plan to throw some paint on the old fender tomorrow just to take a look. Clear will be here tomorrow as well so I hope to get that done.
I may rotate the fender forward. When I do that the struts will get longer because of the angle. I can drop the fender back down closer to the tire with brass sleeves. I'd like to paint the struts black and use brass wing nuts to secure it.

Boom, that could be pretty cool. It could make it a little more interesting. We'll see what happens.

Malloy, Thanks for the tips on the clear spray. I can't wait to get it on.

Joe, i agree with everthing you said. i went back out and took a long look at the seat. It is prettyunique. And so is the tank. So they need to stay as is. I really think the bucket and fender is throwing it off. I removed the fender and it looked better. However, I'm not going to paint the fender until I take the tape off the tank lid to see if it helps. However, by then I will have the junky fender painted so I may already have an answer.

Maritime, I can't wait to get this thing on the road. I love your thinking about ripping up the roads while laying on the lace! Good stuff.

If i can get her done there is a show right in my town in two weeks. That wiould be pretty cool.

Goodfornothing, Yep i'm fast. Haha, actually I had everything ready to go i just needed a little push to go forward.

Kanticoy, thank you so much! Man you rock. Without all those parts this thing would still be sitting up on blocks ;D Bro, I'll get a pm out to you at first chance. My kid is standing over my shoulder to get on here. His grades depend on it. Earlier, I wasn't quite fast enough and my wife left without me. haha, But I made it up for it by making dinner. ;D Hope that last for awhile. I hope to jump back on here later on and I'll respond to your pm then. Good stuff bro. good stuff!

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Haha, I understood Boom. I did have to read it a couple of times though. I like it. It would give it a little character! Now, to paint or not to paint? Mock up a ratter fender and that will answer the question!

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

That lace turned out awesome! Gorgeous bike troybilt! If it matters at all-I vote headlamp matching the tank. I think you're right about a black bucket making it look seperate.

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

by the way Boom, I got the idea ;D I just thought the pic you posted looked like a thong! The stripe ending in a point on the fender makes sense.

Cheers,

maritime

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Hey Troy, just to let you know, the bucket I am sending still has a very nice chrome retainer ring on it. I'd paint to match on the bucket, and leave the chrome ring. Then the fender will tie in. I'm with the guys here too. Leave the seat brown. I think it's rockin. I like jrk's idea...full lace bucket...awesome! And you're welcome bro, any time!!!

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Lace looks great!! This has been a really quick build!!

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Thanks guys. I can't tell you how pleased I am.
Ok fellas I have a little teaser for you. I painted one of my ratty fenders. I also removed the strut and painted it black. Snizzlemydizzle, the thing rocks! What a difference. I don't have too much room in the garage for photos so the couple I post will be it for now. Hopefully when i roll it outside I'll still have the same opinion. For now, its a no brainer. Fender and strut will get painted. I plan to run the bolt up through and secure it with brass wing nuts

When I get time (prob this winter) I want to make new fender strut. I think it needs to be a little taller. I raised up the one i have and put in some brass sleeves and added a wing nut on top. I absolutly love it!

got a few other things done tonight. I threaded some 1/4 round for the new brake linkage and welded up a yoke. I plan to run the rod inside of a chrome sleeve. i bought a chrome water supply line (the kind used for toilets and sinks) that the linkage rod fits into. Works pretty slick. I'll have to finish tomorrow.

For the hub holder on the back wheel I welded plate holder security bolts (bolts with an anti theft head. they are shaped like a tiny hersheys kiss) kinda like studs on a rockers belt. I think the long plain flat bar was boring to to look at. I could have speed drilled but opted for this instead.

Also, i forgot to mention the other day that I changed the hand grips. Mine were looking kinda ratty. Just cheap mountain bike grips but they feel great.
More to come...

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Oh yeah man, that painted fender is where it's at. Defo bring a int of lace into it to tie it together...looks badass. And yes sir on the strut mod, that's the niceness.

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

hhhhhoooootttttt!!! cant wait for the full pics :)

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Raining today! whoo hoo, get to work on the bike again.
Tank is almost ready for clear. Rolled her out side for a few painted fender mock up shots. I will say that i need to be careful about adding too much more brass. Right now the brass is a little raw so i'm assuming that it will tone down a bit as it develops a patina. The wild thing about the paint is that it has some flake in it so it changes tone depending on the sun. In bright sun the lace is pretty hard to see but with Little sun the lace pops out more and everything gets much darker.

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

That's awesome Troy. I really like the brass spacers on the rear fender. I have a brass zippo that I've had for years and the patina on that thing is great, so you'll like the way it ages. I'm leaving the hospital right now going to get off of work...a day of biking for me too! I'll reply to that pm when I'm not on the phone. Good stuff bro! Good stuff.

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Looks great with the painted fender!! Are you going to remove the mount for use as the front fender though?!

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

This is such a killer build--much better than the original bike. I would like to see the taillight center-mounted on the fender, but then you would have to figure out something clever to do with the plate. Are those brass stand-off that attach the fender stay to the fender itself? If so, nice. wood dowls would look killer as well. It would add a soft touch to a hard-edge bike.

Other than that, you're done brother. Very nice.

Oh, make sure that rear brake stay is VERY beefy. 3/16" steel strap would make me feel much better.

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Thanks for the kind words fellas.

Chris, 3/16"x3/4" It should do the trick ;)
The brass sleeves are just bushings. I plan to put the bolt up through and attach with a brass wing nut.
I like the idea of a little bit of wood on the bike.

Marc, that fender is just an old beat up one that I threw paint on for mock up. It doesn't look too bad in the photos but I'd have a ton of bondo on it and it still wouldn't be straight. I believe it is from a 750 and I have no clue how anyone could get that many dents in a fender ???

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Get one of those new gold chains & the brown/bronze grips from Dues.

Looking super good. Rear fender mount arm has the same angle as the front fork? I like the lines

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

i'm still in awe, but the rear brake torque arm is raising an eyebrow. does it work alright? putting rearsets on mine, and that seems a really easy way to cover that problem

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

Forget the tool bag & expose that gold wingnut. Whered you get it? Thats so rad.

Re: 360 dragger/bobber brat what ever

this build is amazing. the lace looks great it really does give an old school look to it. my next build i'm going wild troy your work is hands down very nice and says a lot about ya good job

Man I like the gold chain idea as well as the grips. I can see the grips on this thing in the near future but the chain will have to wait until I redo some things this winter. For one I hate the way the factory welds look. I think the fact that I smoothed mine all out made the factory ones look that much worse. I don't trust just grinding them down because there seems to be such little penetration. I want to re weld them first. This winter i want to clean up the bars. No switches and I may do a jockey shift. i have some other things in mind as well.

Sebatron, Not sure what you are seeing. But that's cool because I like it when we've got each others backs! Are you talking about the hub support/stop arm. If so, the one I'm using is beefer than stock. If you look at the photos i had to spread the front mount supports open to accept the bar. I'm wondering if you are thinking that is the brake linkage maybe? If so, were good because the brake linkage is not on the bike yet.

Curbcast, I was thinking the same thing today. Check out the brass i found in the photos below. Brass bolts and such can be found at good hardware stores. In fact, Lowes has some.

Hey guys thanks so much for the positive comments. they are much appreciated! It keeps me up beat and positive. I really appreciate each and every comment. Makes it all worth it! I apologize for not keeping a more detailed journal. When this started i wanted to share what i was doing but I didn't want to cause a big commotionon on this forum with a detailed journal of a bobber build. However, I really never expected this kind of attention at all. I'll try to answer all the pm and emails as fast as I can.
Thanks again fellas!

Pics:
I was going to save this for show and shine but since curbcast brought it up... ;D (side note: I love how this paint changes tones)
