The more I work on this bike the more my respect grows for y'all that raced the Bultaco in the 60's and early 70's. This bike is so small and compact...suspension is well...non existent. I can see why the fiberglass fenders became part of the landscape.

Waiting on the decals and badges before we do the final paint scheme.

Time to color sand the orange peel from the single stage poly urethane. Just a couple drops of dawn and 1000 grit to start.

This was a major PItA. Single stage hard as you know what had to go 800 1000 2000. I had to use Meguiars Rubbing Compound with a D/A (it says not to use at your own risk)

this is the spray system we have used on our last two bikes. Keeps the air clean and clean up is easy.

Aerosol is a cartridge and so it's disposable and you fill with whatever paint you want?

yes and you can get them for 5 bucks at Home Depot...I like not having to clean up a spray gun etc and disposing of solvents and such.

Home depot US 》Home depot Canada. Seriously, I have found so many things I've wanted or needed on the US site that isn't available. Also better prices.

Duchat sorry to hear about that when I was Zeke's age I asked a Canadian if they celebrated July 4th and he said we skip the 4th and go to the 5th...as an adult I understand what he meant...when I was 15 I spent the summer in France met an 18 year old Canadian gal. O Canada! Then they is DTT and Tim. So many good things in Canada.

That's some serious orange peel! Lot of work with 1000 wet sanding!

we had to go to 800 grit and the polyurethane was very hard. Probably the toughest stuff I have sanded.

not happy tank color sanded vs cowl not sanded. I read that Meguiars #7 was used on single stage after cutting and polishing to bring the color out to a wet show quality look? Any comments or suggestions? Seeing some very fine scratches etc.

The Count Mount Zeke's El Montadero 360

Growing up I was around acrylic enamels and two types of compound: rubbing and polish in a tin can. Fast-forward thirty years. So on our our first bike we used the ford blue acrylic enamel ceramic rattle can. Baked it in the oven. Color sanded to 2000 and hand buffed out the scratches with Meguiers ultimate compound. No polish. Just wax and was happy.

Victoria Bike number 2 in order to get the Honda Red that was an exact match for the RC166 we had a single stage DCC. Cured it under heat lamps. Waited a few days. Color sanded to 2000. Used a HF polisher d/a with an orange pad and the Meguiars Ultimate compound. Easy peazy. Was happy. Wax on wax off.

Now with bike Bultaco numero tres we decided to go with the polyurethane single stage for two reasons, first it is a dirt bike and you should have seen the fuel stains on the tank and second once again the vintage color red doesn't come in a base coat/ clear. (Never have used that either) This experience is teaching us about what it takes to get 2000 grit scratches out of a hard paint.

So last night basically watched the history of paint detailing on YouTube. Mistake number one is I let this paint set up too long. The Meguiars ultimate compound with a BLUE pad will not get the 2000 grit scratches out when the paint is this hard. Maybe with a wool pad it would. I understand that the two stage with a clear coat is even harder.

When I tried the Meguiars Ultimate Compound with a blue pad the scratches just stuck their tongue out and mocked me. So I had some older Meguiars rubbing compound that the instructions said not to use it with a d/a. Who follows instructions? Looked better but still had a dull sheen compared to the original paint.

So the Meguiars 101 and 105 compound were created for super hard paints. The 105 compound came out in 2007 for use with most any pad/machine. But the 101 came out for the guys over the ocean because they like to use a foam pad and a rotary buffer. Both the 101 and 105 are aggressive. Many reported that both worked well with the single stage vintage paints.

So 3M ups the game for base coat/ clear buffing with the 3000 -5000 foam backed sanding pads. Their system 1200 grit on a d/a, 3000 foam back, 5000 foam back then using what I have been using the Mequiars ultimate rubbing with a blue pad and finished with Meguiars Ultimate polish. Removed 100% of the scratches and ended with a perfect finish.

That is some serious effort applied to the perfect finish - perhaps you go one step further and stroke the paintwork with ostrich feathers for an extra smooth polish

Re: The Count Mount Zeke's El Montadero 360

Were on weather hold... same temps as you for the last week with 35 mph winds arggg..

Anyway, for our paint test piece (using Urethane - not Poly) waited 24 hrs (for colors) then wet sanded with dishwasher soap & 800 grit wet/dry. rinsed clean, tacked then shot 2k urethane clear over it... it was glass finish.. didn't have the camera with me ( or protection for the test piece)... so the next day returning with the camera the test piece was miserably loaded from the windy dirt swap between Texas and Nebraska haha. Its all sanded down again and will shoot it again probably Monday... then the rest of the bike if happy with the test...

If you have an opportunity, you might do a test piece with color; wet sand down as above, and shoot clear over it and note the results.. think you might be impressed...

Cheers
