You could take the view that if you bought it cheap enough you could have a play with it, find out you didn't like it and move it on and not lose any money on it.
Cleaned up and running, I'd say it is worth around $3000; so yep, not a bad investment. Plus, you will gain the know-how for the next one you really want to keep (if it is not this one).
Good luck! Hopefully the next pics are in your drive
As soon as I walked in the barn and saw it I knew there was no way in hell I was leaving without that bike loaded on my truck and think old earl knew it. Got old earl down to 1200 and. Loader her up carried her home in a rainstorm. Had to unload it up the road because I was by myself and there is a good incline to roll it out. Walked it home in the rain from there about a half mile slightly uphill. Almost killed me. But once I got her home and dried her off. I just smiled knowing It was mine. Sweet Motorcycle victory.

Looks like it should clean/polish up nicely. Keep your eyes peeled for some 'euro' bars - the stock bars on the european bikes were much narrower and lower - might be R90/S bars as well. I have a set on my R75 and like them a lot better than the tall 'american' bars they put on the ones shipped here.
It's got the nice alloy body signals as well - those are worth a solid $100-$200 for the set on their own. Very nice score, at least once you ditch the crash bar
YEah man I can't wait to get to work on it. Alloy rims rock these bitches polish right up. Anybody have a good source for online manuals/ info on these old airheads. I really need to get a wiring diagram asap.
Get the Clymer manual for starters, pricey but worth it.
There are quite a few BMW forums out there, BMWMOA.org, http://www.bmbikes.org.uk/Forum/ (slow moving site, but lots of knowledge) and http://www.airheads.org for starters.
Oh and get yourself some Silver leaf Rub and buff for the acre's of alloy.
Getting her cleaned up right now. going pretty well got the bags off one is cracked on top. Not sure what brand these are but not all that impressive. I'd like to get some nice hard bags that are easy to pop off and carry into a hotel or something. There is some patchwork on the top of the left exhaust what a shame. oh well. One other oddity I have found is that it appears to have /5 hand controls on the bars. Hmmm. will post pics when i get home. Got to get a battery hooked up proper and see if i can get the electrics working.
That's because it has the drum brake. The later /6 bikes got the disk upgrade. Yours is a transition bike. The /5 controls are beautiful though man. Gear and chain driven all metal construction throttle? Gorgeous.
yeah that is what it is. Not that i mind just an observation wonder why they got replaced.. Preference perhaps? Really need to get ino a new battery so i can test the electrics.
Looks like your moving along on the BMW, I am truely jealous. but it does give me some motivation to look for a Guzzi this year... Is that your Magna I see on CL? Thinning the herd already? Got to try and ride around Labor day-
Krauser was the defacto luggage on these old Airheads and they came in a couple different sizes. But, if it were me, I'd be looking at modifying a couple of Pelican cases to act as bags. Probably bolt onto the rack you already have on the bike with a little imagination.
been caught up finishing the cb350 got her good to go though. Now all i need is a notary to get her registered and legal. As far as the R60 goes i got it hooked up to a good battery and the starter rolls the engine and the plugs spark well and all lights are functional. I think all i may need is to clean up the gas tank and petcocks and fill er up, replace the rear tire/ filters/ oil and give it a go see if she runs. I have a good feeling it just might. Trying to figure out tires right now. Never done tubes before so it's a learning process. I think rear tire is 4.00- 18in. From research this is equal to a 110/90 18. Does that sound right? Plus read it's ok to run tubeless tires with tubes is that Right? Has an avon super venom on the front tire so thinking i'll go with an avon rear any suggestions. primarily need a good long distance tire that can hold up in the curves.
Matt.. yeah sadly it is my magna. Wife doesn't think that i need 3 bikes i don't see her point?
I remember when I bought my 2nd bike and the wife asked what I was going to do with my 1st. I just stared at her with that perplexed look and asked... "What do you mean?".
To answer at least one of your questions, yes, you can run tubes in tubeless tires. And the size comparison sounds right. I know I've seen a chart somewhere- will post it when I find it. Now get that Honda registered!
