CB175 Cafe Buildup - The beginnings of something... small.

Re: CB175 Cafe Buildup - The beginnings of something... small. *She's rideable!

Last update of the day. Fabbed up the second muffler mount, cleaned up and painted the rear frame, and did a little bit of work on the carbs to try and get a solid idle.

I also said to myself, fuck it, and taped the battery in place, hopped my ass on the frame with no seat, and took it for a spin around the block. The thing runs and rides great! Pulls smooth, no huge driveability issues that I saw or felt. Shifts cleanly through all 5 gears. Slowly but surely worked it up to 40 mph or so, checking for proper brake and suspension function.

I'm pretty sure I'm done with it for the day. Tomorrow I'll be working on the carbs a bit, trying to get that idle solid. Carbs are still total voodoo to me, so I expect a lot of trial and error. Mostly error.

dude, love the bike, i want a small cc bike SOO bad, this is only making it worse. ill be following, the japanese zero look is fantastic. cant wait to see it done

This little lady is going to have a fat ass :)

Got my Roc City Cafe Bonneville seat Roughly placed on the bike. I need to make a spacer to sit on the frame to raise the front a bit as well as cut a bit off my battery tray to lower the rear. I think it looks awesome so far.

The seat itself is VERY well made. Really sturdy construction, even, symmetrical design, and good thick fiberglass application. I'd buy another Roc City seat in a heartbeat.

Great looking build so far! I agree with Sean from Roccity's products being awesome. I have the daytona seat on my build and i was amazed at how well made it is. And the price isnt bad either! Cant wait to see this finished product!!!

The fact that they give a discount to DCC members with build threads is the icing on the cake!

So, I started working on the spacers to mount the seat at the proper height. I'm using some 1" square tubing drilled to mount onto the threaded inserts in the top of the frame for the battery holder. I'll be using some quarter inch rubber stripping to close the gap between the spacer and the seat, due to the curved shape of the seating area. Finally, the seat itself will be screwed down to the spacers which will be drilled and tapped, using rubber washers and button head screws. I imagine I'll have it squared away tomorrow.

I'm going to do something similar to this, except since I am using my stock hinges, the rubber stops will sit on the frame, not mount to it.

Just another idea for you, in case you haven't seen.

Re: CB175 Cafe Buildup - The beginnings of something... small.

I'm really enjoying your build. I've got a not at all typical project I'm going to be starting myself soon. Keep up the great work!

Well, I finally got my spacers finished and my Roc City Racers Bonneville seat mounted up. I need to do a little bit of shaping at the bottom of the seat to better match the seat, as well as adding a bit of rubber stripping at the front to close the gap between the tank and the seat, all while reducing seat vibration. BTW, the spacers, frame, and seat are all isolated from each other with rubber washers and stripping. Should be a relatively vibration free ride.

Argh... I hate reading a thread like this and seeing great progress and then it just dies.

Update, kind sir?

She's still coming along. Nothing new cosmetically, just working on getting it running a little bit better. The left cylinder is hit or miss as far as running consistently, I think the carb is being a little wonky. Right cylinder is running great. I'm also fabbing up some drop in exhaust plugs to give me a little more back pressure, as well as sealing up the exhaust leak where the new mufflers are clamped onto the old pipes.

She's slowly but surely coming along. My big bike has been taking my attention though.

I know the last post was a few weeks ago but I am working on a CL175 and am looking for some inspiration. I noticed you said you built a second shelf under the seat. I'm curious how you configured everything. Any chance of getting a pic of how it sits now with the seat off?

Great build so far though!

I'll grab a pic next time I yank the seat off.

BTW, got her running nicely after yanking her out of storage. It was running on only one cylinder, and it turns out the carb was gunked up on the non-running side preventing it from getting any fuel from the tank. Cleaned it up and it fired right up. Ran like a dream around the block until I ran out of gas and had to scoot it home. Luckily it was all down hill. Whoops.

Pulls plenty strong, but I've got leaks at the exhaust where the new pipes hit the factory ones, so I've got to seal it up a bit.

Unfortunately, here are the only pics I grabbed, in low light and with a camera phone. Better pics will come soon.

Better pics now:

And of course, gotta have one of my fat ass on board. 6'1" and 225 lbs makes most bikes look tiny:
