CB350 Built by a teen (Weld Now, Grind Later)

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Very nice work, Beave, but in light of the convoluted history of this thread, what does all this have to do with David's bike?

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Me welding. Other than that, I dunno. LOL! It'll be another couple of weeks before we do anymore work. Right now, we are tryng to figure out the locking collar situation for the header pipes, as once that is done, I can finish welding the header, and then it's all on him to get it running, since I know jackall about these motorcycle things. heh

Glad it's not just me, just trawled through the last five pages of this thread looking for content relating to a CB350 and found a bunch of other stuff (some of it amusing in a weird way) thought I was going to see pics of some crazy, sexy exhaust for a bike and found some bloke posting pictures of a Honda exhaust, but not the one I was expecting to see .

Thought I'd blundered onto the "Too Fast, To Furious Spurious" forum.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

OK, bringing it back on topic, I realized the last time I worked on Dave's bike I didn't get a pic of the main body standoff as I was just super happy about how the welds were turning out.

Edit: I'll keep my musings closer to topic, too. heh

I wouldn't worry about going off topic in this thread
It's wandered all over the place, why change anything ;D

Trying to remember a class I vaguely remember taking in college...I may or may not have been studying beer more intensively......

7071: My understanding is that it's the original Fortal or an alloy that was used previous to the change to standard 7075?

http://www.springerlink.com/content/x504k98xr4016v25/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminum_alloy

As far as I can tell, it's just another variation on the far more standard 7075 alloy (or on the way to) with some adjustment of the zinc and chromium(?) content to effect it's resistance to exfoliation and corrosion. There are a lot of minor variations and specialty alloys out there. Want to be metallurgically confused? Spend some time in a factory race lab, especially F1 and MotoGP. They have giant brains that sit around working up new alloys to do specific things under specific conditions.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

I didn't realize that Dural was a precipitation hardened 2000 series alloy. Dural used to be the the most common "alloy" in the UK back in the day. We had Dural engine plates and tappet nuts.

And the exotic ERGAL turns out to be 7075 which has 5.6-6.1% zinc, 2.1-2.5% magnesium, 1.2-1.6% copper, and less than half a percent of silicon, iron, manganese, titanium, chromium, and other metals. I always thought it was a magnesium based alloy rather than Al, but that turns out not to be completely accurate.

It's incredibly light and strong though.

7075 is a bugger to machine compared with 6061

Nearing completion:cant wait to see how this ends!!

Probably my best weld of the day:

daves_bike_02.jpg

That is 1/8" plates to thin sheet on the frame, making a standoff for the new body, which will fit something like this:

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

I've finally figured out how to finish up the header without needed the exact lock collar that we'll eventually have to have! I have tests coming up this and next, but, after that, I'll be putting in some work on Dave's bike. =) He'll have to be around for the final placement of the tailpipe (mostly because I really have no idea where it should exactly point), but, I can at least get the final placement and weld the runners to the collector!

As to what I am going to do, it's rather simple. I'm going to make the collars out of wood for now. I actually found some 1.5" SS stock I had in my stash, which is waiting to get cut up (to fit in a USPS flatrate box, because if it fits, it ships!) and sent to a friend with a lathe (who is also going to be turning me a big, honkin' shift knob) to have the actual collars made. I realized I wanted to cut out too many steps at once. LOL! I don't mind making non-permanent fixtures.

Im confused... Are you building Davids bike for him now? Do you owe him money? Is he holding a loved one ransom? What is going on here?

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Well Joe, as they say... These are the days of our lives. Ha...

I'm helping him because I can weld. No, I don't owe him money. I don't think anyone could actually hold any of my loved one's for ransom. They would drive their abductor(s) nuts and they would either be killed or returned rather quickly.

I like challenges. I've never done stuff like motorcycles before, so, it's fun and interesting. He's just uber busy with school, as am I, so that's why everything has been quiet lately. But, we actually have a much better plan and, I think that is one of the more important parts because Dave tends to get bogged down with details, like which bits of this and that he wants to polish next. LOL!

Details: what bong should i use today? We know

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Ahahaha, spot on.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

i see you motherfuckers are still cutting jokes about me.

Anyway, I'm home from school this wednesday night. No work has been done on the bike since the last update; Classwork has been in the way for both me and theacidbeaver.

also, just realized he found out about my issue... you know, details... (polishing, ha, ha...)

Come on now, I'm an engineering student; I don't have to bother with such un-controlled technologies as a tube which intends to cool the smoke coming off of a crudely combusted plant.

...We have vaporizers...

truthfully though, had a lot of learning to do this year in school. Hopefully I'll just squeak by this semester; last semester set me back a lot and I have tons of work to do for a few years to make up for it, and get my GPA back where it should be.

I've given up on drinking and partying at school, as I found I do not really enjoy either in the fashion that most college students choose to use. That alone has made a great difference, among other things.

Thats just a short life update, since it seems like all of you love hearing about my soap opera of a life so much :)

I have not spoken to Matthew recently, but I expect to get some work done asap, so its all dependent on his schedule. Bikes still in mind though! I will be really dedicated to it once I get back from school, as I miss the work dearly.
