CB550F Cafe Interceptor

Re: CB550F Interceptor

Honestly, I really dig the raw stainless. But I could take it either way! Looks great man. And I am having the battle of the CR26s as well. They are ridiculously tall aren't they? But man, they are smooth acting carbs and designed to be serviced. I love the way the jet needle is held in. Brilliant design.

Agreed! They are beautiful carbs, but man what a pain in the arse.
Did you have petcock interference issues too?

I couldn’t find a petcock that would clear the carbs so the interim solution was to machine a straight stainless steel fuel nipple and use an inline fuel tap from Motion Pro. With this setup, I don’t have a reserve, but this isn’t a touring bike so hopefully it won’t be a problem.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

Awesome machine, your attention to detail is on point. Did you figure out the petcock yet? When I had CR's on my GS, I had a Pingel 'Guzzler' petcock and it worked quite perfectly....

Not sure if it would work with your clearances but its worth a look...

Thanks for sharing with us!

Re: CB550F Interceptor

Very nice...

All 550 owner's now have a nearly un-obtainable level of perfection to achieve if they don't want to be immediately compared in a sub-standard manor to this machine.

Great ob!

Re: CB550F Interceptor

I love blingy billet aluminum parts, but in the real world they just don’t hold up all that well without constant care and attention, that’s one of the reasons I anodize my aluminum bits.
I also find that an anodized parts looks finished and more subtle in the scheme of things.
Here are the intake manifolds after the o-ring grooves where machined, undergoing a weight loss program and finally clear anodized.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

For a clean flush look I’m using the recessed nuts from these bicycle seat post pinch bolts to fasten the manifolds to the head.

Quarter inch aluminum spacers move the carbs back to alleviate the fuel line interference.

Come on by, but don’t forget the beer. ;D

HAHA, I would bring you as much beer as you wanted it you taught me to machine like this ;) . Unfortunately Vancouver, B.C. is a little far to drive (just a little, haha).
Bike looks so good, and I love the CR carbs.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

I’ve been having reliability issues with cheap ebay LED signals so I decided to try a set of Harrison Specialties billet aluminum mini bullet signals on the rear.
They’re not cheap, but the LED clusters are easy to swap out and the clusters themselves are quite reasonable.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

Because the rear signals are an integral part of the fender mounting system, I had to spin up some stalks and grommet inserts.

These LED’s are super bright and of excellent quality.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

I have now bought two sets fo cheap throwaway ebay blinkers and they were junk. Time to buy something quality.

Did the standoffs come from Harrison as well? I couldn't see them on that site.

Sorry for the delays. I've been away on vacation for Spring Break.

I made the stand-offs specifically for my bike.
Harrison has some basic stand offs available, but not those.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

So, when you switch from the factory airbox to pods, what do you do with all the space left vacant between the battery and the electrical components?
I know that many builders will relocate the electrical panel and battery into the bump of a café seat and open up the frame to create a minimal effect, but I firmly believe that the side covers define the Super Sport so they stay.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

If ever there was a complaint with these old bikes, it would have to be the lack of storage space, as there is hardly enough room to carry a small tool kit and insurance documents.
That vacant space will make a fine storage compartment suitably sized to carry tools, documents, the GPS when I’m off the bike, a rotor lock and a spare pair of gloves if needed.

This is the plug that will be used as a mold to fab up a carbon fiber glove box tucked neatly under the seat.
It required a tapered shape so it wouldn’t be seen protruding between the frame tubes or under the side covers.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

A bit of extra clearance is needed because the plug will be the inside of the storage compartment and the finished part will be slightly larger due to the carbon fiber and Kevlar cloths are applied over the plug.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

I’ve been a bit slow getting things done on the bike, but the storage compartment is finally finished and installed.
It conveniently slips right in and fastens to the stock air filter housing hardware. You’ll also notice I put the idle screw there too.

Thanks for your kind words of support and following along.

I’ve built a lot of one-off parts for this bike over the last year or two and other than the lathe (which admittedly, I rely on heavily) the tools in my shop are pretty common workshop tools that most member probably have.

I still have to make an exhaust hanger and won’t be using the lathe for any part of it, so I’ve been considering a step by step thread on building parts from thick plate aluminum using common workshop tools.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

Whooo Hoo. This bike rocks!
The upgrades to the carbs, cam and exhaust have made a huge difference in the engines output.
The carbs worked really well straight out of the box, but there’s more to be found on the dyno I’m sure.
Stay tuned for dyno numbers soon.
