CBR600F2 project

the F2 project is still coming along. I took some breaks this summer, but worked on it here and there. it gets hot here in FL so the garage is an OVEN. now that the weather is finally getting nice, I have been motivated to make some more progress.

Since the last update:
- new oil and filter
- radiator installed, new hoses, coolant added
- carbs installed
- coils installed
- exhaust headers: rust stripped, sanded, high-temp paint, and new exhaust gaskets
- frame sliders mounted
- new fork seals installed

At the moment I'm saving up money for some new rubber. The next step is sorting out the wiring and getting the controls connected. The "still-to-do list" includes painting the tank, making a seat, making a tail section, brakes, rearsets, and painting/mounting the fairing. More to come, hopefully sooner rather than later!

before you get too much on therre you thought about hitting that motor black?

yeah, when I had the motor out I considered it, but decided to paint only the clutch and stator covers, and leave the rest of the motor "natural". I know what you mean --- I've seen bikes with black engine paint and it can look really good, but I like the way the metal looks on this one.

more progress. wiring harness secured, airbox installed, K&N filter cleaned, oiled, and installed. compared to the older bikes I've worked on the airbox seems MASSIVE. but I guess with the RPM these motors turn they need all the air they can get. new chain and sprockets too, ready to install. 15T PBI front and 45T Sunstar rear. O-ring 530 chain.

A cbr600 is on my list of project bikes. This is looking great.

wiring harness is installed, battery re-located to tail, grips and control cables installed, electrical components temp mounted.

I mocked up the tail light to start working on design for a seat/tail unit. Also started on the "lightening" holes on the rearsets.

a little more progress here and there. I sold my CX500 and bought an XL600R for use as a daily rider, and lately I've been working on that. still, a few things happening on the F2...

chain and sprockets on.
rearsets drilled, cleaned up, and mounted.
tank primed.

At the moment I am in the process of mounting the rear brake system. I am waiting on a stainless steel brake line. Notice the "choke lever" I am using until I get something figured out. Not intended for riding use! =)

"Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 30 days."

Thirty??? Times that by ten and you are starting to get close! =) So yes, my F2 has spent most of the past year sitting in my garage collecting dust. Blah blah blah.

But.......

I blew off the dust, cleaned out the carbs, and fired it up last month. Hmmmmmm, it's ALIVE. I was motivated to make a basic seat and tail section. The materials are plywood, balsa, wooden dowels, and fiberglass cloth. I used West Systems epoxy to lay it all up. I will cut a small section of foam from the original (MASSIVE) seat, and then cover that with some of the 'leather' covering from the stock seat. The tank is already painted white, and as soon as the seat/tail is finished and painted I can clear coat both of them. Then on to the headlight. I still need to bite the bullet and get some new rubber on those nice white wheels.

Hopefully it won't be 2013 before more progress is made. =)

There's something about red and white that just works. I'd shorten that secondary pipe so that the muffler moves forward and closer to the rear edge of the rearsets and I'd shorten the muffler but about 50%.

That seat doesn't work for me - sorry to say. Is there a way to modify something like an early VFR seat and side covers to minimally cover the subframe and still look sharp?

Just a few thoughts.

last feb i said something about hoping it wouldnt be 2013 until i made some more progress on my f2. well, it almost was. The bike spent most of 2012 in my garage, nothing more than something i had to step around to get to my fishing stuff. in december i decided i was tired of looking at it. i got some new Shinko Apex tires mounted up. cleaned up the brakes, painted the headers, then put it all back together. I fired it up and took it for a ride. it still needs a headlight, horn, and at least one mirror to make it street legal. I will go simple up front, with just a bucket headlight and maybe one gauge and/or some indicator lights. more to come in 2014. =)
