Been Around the Block
DTT BOTM WINNER
I was a active member a decade ago. Have been out of motorcycle building for a while but started a four wheel project recently that will have a motorcycle engine. I am out to build a smaller version of a Ferrari 312 pb. Original car had a 3 liter flat 12 so I am using a goldwing 1.5 flat six . If you want me to post it as I go let me know. Here is the real deal and where I am at with the build.

Oh, be still my heart! That is exactly the kind of project that I've had in my head for most of my life. I, for one, am very interested, please keep us posted.

Would love to see how you tie all this together, particularly that rear end.

Good deal! It's good to be back doing this kind of stuff. It been years and I had forgotten how much I love this .....and hate it!! Forgot the feeling of being itchy with fiberglass!!! Started really working on the body this week. A little frustrated that the radiator housing are about 1/2 in to tall but not a big deal to trim and redo a few angles. The rear end is a little tricky but I am using a Polaris sportsman xp1000 differential which has roughly the same HP and torque as the wing. My first glimpse of the shape

What sort of steering box will you use and what were you going to do for rear suspension? This thing is cooler than the other side of the pillow. With that engine and the vehicles weight, it should be a little rocket ship

No major updates but was able to rough the doors, which was a major pain!!! A few tweaks and add the upper side screens then on to the front. I am waiting for the machine shop to finish the drive shaft that is why I am doing all the bodywork first. Rear arms, hubs, and brakes will be from a Polaris sportsman 1000. Steering is just a standard buggy rack and pinion.

I am torn between building the earlier version of the 312 or the later. Earlier didn't have rear wheel flares or a rear wing just fins. What do you all think?

FWIW, I kinna like the earlier version. To me it has more of a "this vehicle was built for the track and nothing but the track" look whereas the later version, being more sculpted and swoopy, while very nice, looks more "tarted up" to my eye. I guess it's like comparing the original Ford GT40 to the newer street version GT40; very nice but more civilized.

I agree, I like the earlier version more as well. It has a more all business old school racer look.

However... what's to prohibit you from mixing? If you like the wing would it be possible to incorporate the wing into the earlier body? Or would that not be a proper thing to do?

I originally set out to do the later version, but I had piece of foam board left over that was about the right size and set it up and liked the simplicity.
