I picked up this 1981 kz650 a few weeks ago.

It's my first bike. I plan on doing a lot of work to it until the riding season, then learning to ride, and over next winter strip it back down and paint it, and finish it up. It came with a Vance and Hines 4into1 header I'm going to put on with a different muffler. It came with pods as well (not sure if thats what those air intake things are called). I know i need to rejet the carbs now, I have them off and plan on cleaning them up nice. can anyone direct to to instructions and parts in doing so, and if putting on a norton style muffler would effect the rejeting?
some major mods I have planned are clubman bars, and a custom made seat. and alot of little parts that will overall streamline and clean the bike up (blinkers, mirrors ect..)
Also if anyone is parting out one of these bikes I would like to purchase a center stand.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Welcome 29 Palms!

For all the goods on the KZ650 head over to kz650.info
Lots of information and really knowledgeable folks on that board.

PM me... I have a center stand that I took off my '78 KZ650 that I can part with. I'm not entirely sure it will fit, but it's just a matter of checking the fiche online.

Good look with the project! They are nice riding bikes.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Welcome! I've got a 77' KZ650C, always nice to see another 650 on here. If you need any help, ask a good question and it usually gets a good answer! I'll be watching this one.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Welcome fellow KZ owner!! Its nice to the them popping up. I have a 76 KZ400

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

The carbs would have most likely needed rejetting when the pods and exhaust were added. The bike will run like shit and pop like crazy. If they weren't rejetted when the PO did the upgrades, rejet them when you rebuild the carbs. Jets are cheap. Headwork isn't. Your best bet for jets is ebay. Look up a company called Speedmotoco. Rebuild kits are about $25 per carb. Jets are about $5 each

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

try kzrider.com

i have a 79 kz650 ive been slowly tinkering with
have fun

z1 is a greatsource

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

I go to my local kawasaki guys....may sound wierd but their jets are $2.50 each and there isn't any shipping and I bring em home and toss them in.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Must be nice to have a local bike shop that actually stocks stuff!

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Heh, yeah...they really just have a bunch of old boxes that have the "gold" I need in them. If they have to order them in for me (as has been the case when they only had 2 of the 4 jets I needed) it only costs 4.50 a jet to get em. Not terrible again. They had a box of shims for the KZ too...kinda nice since I needed 3 new ones but those were 8 bucks a piece. Let me know if you guys need anything for a 650 since they seem to have it in stock! haha

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Yeah most local bike shops...unless theyre complete ripoffs usually can order jets cheap. I use z1 for most everything, but for the mains in my KZ750 I found em cheaper at my local shop...its about the only cheap thing Ive ever found there. They only cost like $1.39 a piece and no shipping charges. XD

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Looking forward to your project 29 palms.
The 650 site http://www.kz650.info/ was hacked into recently, so we've shut down any new membership.
Should be open to new memebers again soon.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Thank you everyone for all the responses. Ok heres an update. I've got the carbs off, going to re-jet them, new carb boots, and gaskets. I'm thinking I'm going to drive out to Z1 later this week to pick all that up (only 50 minutes away, jealous yet?) I'm thinking on putting in a electric ignition and getting rid of the vacuum advance. http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=201. Anyone have good luck with this system?
I've got clubman bars in the mail from cb750cafe.com and tail lights that are a surprise coming as well.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Alight I went to Z1 enterprises today, found out my bike already has an electronic ignition. I rejeted the carbs today and started polishing them up. Also look what came in the mail.

I know 59 caddy lights are a little overused in the streetrod world, but I've never seen them on a cafe racer. The second picture is the tail section in a very rough mock-up.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

I finished polishing the carbs tonight.
IMG_2502resized.jpg

I don't think the float bowls are aluminum, maybe pot metal, they just didn't want to polish up that nice.
IMG_2503resized.jpg

The clubman bars I ordered came today so I had to test them out.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Man... polishing old metal is a pain in the arse!! I can't believe I don't see 24 empties on the bench ...

I surely would have put that many away and maybe polished one carb bowl!

Lookin' good!

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

I might have to put that many away when I start polishing up the engine later this week.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

this weeks been fun. I took apart the headlight and discovered a whole mess of wires. I'm going to get some different headlight brackets and maybe a different headlight. I still have to decide on gauges as well. I hacked apart the rear frame today and started the tail section. I'm going to hammer it out of some steel. Right now its just templated out of aluminum trim.
I'm going to add part of the frame back in there for support after i figure out where everything goes.
