First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project (FINISHED)

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

I like those knee dents you made, they look very clean. I'm interested to see how you shorten the lines. The link looks like a good idea for throttle, and for the brake line maybe you could make your own braided stainless line? I think there is a write up on here somewhere how to do that.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Thanks that looks like a great idea to shorten the lines, I'm going to give it a try.
Heres a picture of my template for the dash.

It was nice enough outside the other day to wheel the bike out and get a picture from a distance.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

do you have lights yet for the dash. i have a bag of different colors and styles that i bought when i was making my dash.. then i ended up getting an acewell

let me know if u are interested in my goods

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Hey man!

Glad to see you're back in action.

That dash will look pretty trick when you're done. Did you flip your headlight bucket ears? That will give you some space below your dash if you need it.

Nice gauges!

Thanks, this bike didn't come with headlight ears as you see on most kz650s, it had a wire support, so I bought some aluminum ears to hold the headlight.

Sorry won't be needing any of your goods haha, I have all the indicator bulbs already bought.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

quick question. do you think I will have any problems running a 4into1 vance and hines header into a single norton muffler like this http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-exhaust-parts-norton-commando-style-muffler-80-84044.html. The part where it adapts to the header is smaller but that can be cut off and a larger piece welded on. Just wondering if it will restrict the exhaust, over the muffler that comes with the vance and hines header.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

I guess that would depend upon how much packing, and diameter of the inside of the pipe and the length. But, as with most things on any bike, playing with the jetting can USUALLY make anything run ok. And it's really about how much air you are moving out of the bike, and backpressure. Should be fine, but I'm sure others will pipe in (bad joke eh?) with better info. I would think that the exhaust if already made as a 4-1, would be ok with any pipe on it, so long as it is after the point where the 4 meet into one because those lengths are the part that is "tuned."

I cut the dash plates out of aluminum, I'm just going to add lights, spacers and bolts not the finish it.

I used some stripper on the tank, and got that cleaned up, took off everything but the old primer. I just need to have a hole patched where i nicked it while grinding the Kawasaki name brackets off.

Heres a picture of all new the parts I need to put on the bike.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Well its been a long time since I last posted an update. Schools finally out and I've had a little bit of time to start back on the project. I'm getting antsy too since its actually nice out. anyways, I've made some progress on the gauge cluster. I originally wanted to make this gauge cluster instead of buying an acewell, so I would save money, little did I know how much time I'd have in it.

Here is an view of all the parts I made for it. Used stainless nuts, bolts and cut some stainless tube for the spacers. The plates are aluminium brushed with 400 grit.

Looking forward to your project 29 palms.
The 650 site http://www.kz650.info/ was hacked into recently, so we've shut down any new membership.
Should be open to new memebers again soon.

Explains why I could not register yesterday. I have an 81 kz650 h1 and searching for rejet diagrams on what to rejet for carbs and straight pipes. 29 Palms, welcome. My bike is my first and same make/model and year.

Re: First bike, kawasaki kz650 Cafe project

Hey everyone sorry for the long time between posting, I haven't had internet for a while/been real busy. The bike has been done for a few weeks now. I went and took a msf course and got my license too. Ill throw up some finished pictures now and add some more build pictures in the next week. Thanks everyone for the help.
