Honda CL350 Build - Help Needed!

Re: Honda CL350 Build - Now Wiring and Mikuni Carb Tuning

So lifes been getting in the way of the bike. My birthday is coming up and so I took the liberty of buying my wife's gifts for me. Ordered new points, condensor, rectifier, exhaust joints, pilot jets, main jets, and getting a battery tomorrow. I also have fuel line, ignition, and more packed up. Points, Condensor and Rectifier all came in today. Installing tomorrow. I'll be toooooo excited to sleep tonight. ;D

Re: Honda CL350 Build

Solder ignition switch - check.
Install and gap new points - check.
Install and wire condensor - check.
Fill new battery with acid without getting acid on yourself - oops.

Should be firing this thing up by this weekend... I hope.

Re: Honda CL350 Build - IT RUNS!!!

;D ;D ;D IT RUNS, IT RUNS ;D ;D ;D

I took yesterday and learned how to solder. I wired in a new universal started switch and let my battery charge over night. After work today, the fun began. Cutting and soldering a bunch of wires was followed by the installation of fuel lines and filters on the Mikuni VM32s. With the cylmer manual in hand I gapped the points, and plugs. and then turned the ignition on... to my surprise the neutral light lit up. I didn't have heavy enough wire to do the starter, so I decided to try to kick it off. Third tries really are the charm, on the third kick the bike roared to life, and about threw me off of it when the kick starter came flying back up. I only let it run a minute, cause I don't have the exhaust on it, but I was in heaven for that minute! I'll shoot some vid in a few days.

Stay Tuned in for...
1. Mikuni VM32 tuning
2. Fabricating Reverse Megaphones for my high pipes.

Re: Honda CL350 Build

absolutely splendid!!

be sure to keep us posted!

Re: Honda CL350 Build

i have always pictured that bike in your avitar zooming around corners and shit! i like it so much i am gonna make mine black and white and someday ill prob get rid of the bumstop and make one that has that flatter slope to it like yours and some other bikes i have seen instead of the bubble i got now.
anyway glad to hear that it runs and also real glad you are gonna set up the brakes first and are learining about the electrical system.
(i learned about where they come from and go when i wired up my own custom horn and set me factory blinker switch to control the headlight and indecator) hehehhehe

congrats keep pluggin away and you will make the Deals gap meet in the spring!!!!!

HAHA I appreciate the optimism and the compliments.

I ran into some electrical gemlins tonight, but I think I got them figured out.

Re: Honda CL350 Build

i just identify which interrupt it is, ground or positive and then switch the concern wire with a known good (hot or grounded)
wire. add in a 4 dollar multi meter from harbor freight, a test light(bare 12v bulb with two wire clipped on to it) and a wiring diagram itl al be figured out before morning!!!

Re: Honda CL350 Build

Found the culprit. Bad starter solenoid. No biggie.

Anyways here's the update pics:

Video of it running without exhaust... I'm getting a lil oil from the right cylinder, looks like another teardown and new rings are on the agenda. Sounds like an excuse for bigger pistons and a cam. "Evil Laugh" HAHAHA.

BTW sorry for the cell phone pics and video, I didn't have my camera with me.

Re: Honda CL350 Build

i knew you would git'r dunn
spring time deals gap NC ride in ride out campout!!!!!! sounds good huh???? f yea
woooooo
oh yea bike sounds pretty mean, maybe the leak will seal once it heats a little and gets fresh oil on it? re torque?
i dont know what i am talking about i just hate to wait for parts and have my bike off of the road, 8)

Re: Honda CL350 Build

Gap sounds legit, I'll make it my goal. I'm gonna drop a lil transmission fluid, or Lucas Oil in the cylinder and see if it'll seal up any. Its not much oil, but any is too much. I've gotta get my exhaust on my ears are still ringing!

Re: Honda CL350 Build

The CL's muffler is shot so I'm thinking about cutting the pipes off and adding a Y pipe. I don't want to hurt performance, where should I cut the pipes off and do the Y? And what diameter should the out be and how long should it be?

Re: Honda CL350 Build

'Y' pipe isn't best way but is easiest.
outlet should be about 1.5 x diameter of front pipe as there isn't constant flow from each cylinder (easiest way to describe it, the exhaust 'pulses' fit into spaces between each other and give more constant flow at outlet)

And PJ to the rescue again. What do you suggest instead of the 'Y' pipe?

Re: Honda CL350 Build

Lots of work done tonight. First off I knocked the rusted bucket of a muffler that was on the exhaust pipes. Fixed the bent up heat shields, and stuck the pipes on the bike for a mock up. Man it sounds alot quiter, and ran alot better even with the straight pipes on.

Then it was time to tackle the mess of wires protruding from the headlight bezel. Some of the connectors were missing so new ends were soldered on. Now I've got high and low beams, tach and speedo lights horn, ect..

I wasn't going to run a rear fender but after getting beat by rocks on a four wheeler I decided fenders are a good thing. So next on my list is to cut the rear fender off at the end of the frame and mount a tail light and tag on the back.

I'm having trouble sourcing the arms and linkages for the front brake, and an exhaust joint. Anybody got some they are willing to sell cheap ????

Re: Honda CL350 Build

no offense... but it was a REALLY fucking dumb idea to run that motor without headers.

your lucky you didnt burn your valves or do something even worse!

otherwise its looking good

Re: Honda CL350 Build

Hey Rocan, if u read the post I only ran it for like a minute. Just long enough to see if it was going to run not long enough for it to heat up, AKA so it wouldnt burn the valves. Dont mind the criticism though, always good to have a sanity check.

Re: Honda CL350 Build

Mocked up the hand made rear sets.

Now I've got to go to the hardware store and by all the correct hardware and materials to make linkages out of (no the flattened end conduit is not staying). Also got to pick up a belt for the belt sander, so I can clean up the shifter and brackets.
