TJ, whats your method for interfacing with a chain drive and that tasty GS wheel?
(I love the lacing and ability to run tubeless with spokes!)

Lee,

On the Kay it's a straightforward swap [ shaft drive as GS ].

The cunning plan if I decide to use them on the TR1 "Special" is to use BMW forks - which also gives me 305mm discs and 4 pot Brembos as stock and on the rear make a spindle carrier up that bolts to the wheel via the 4 mounting holes. I did look at this quite seriously and it will be very simple - for someone with machining facilities / ability. Even without good / any facilities I had looked at using a standard alloy front wheel [ TR1 / XV ] and chopping out the bearing housing from the hub and making an adaptor.

At the moment I have some indecision [ no change there ! ] I already have the 5 spoke BMW K1200S wheels for the Kay [ conversion now all complete ], I also have a spare set of XS650 wheels for a Willow style, and now the GS wheels.

I have a guy here who has offered me stupid money [ £400 - $900 ? ] for the 2 x 5 spoke wheels. IF I sell them, then I will use the GS wheels on the Fighter - if I don't sell, then I still have options. I hope that doesn't sound too complicated !

Well, we're almost back on track now. My move to the new workshop has been delayed - no change there, but should be complete this month. I plan to get the Fighter down to the workshop this week - at least it will be in the dry [ !! ] and hopefully give me that kick up the ass I need. The 5 spoke wheel conversion IS now complete, so I'll be sticking with them for now. However I have seen a 6" wide version [ rear ] of the steel spoked alloy wheels ................ ::).

I fired it up the other day just to get the juices flowing again - worked ! I've even decided on the colourways now, and I'll finalise those planes once all the bodywork has been fettled and prepped for paint.

Made a new start on the project. Finalised front wheel conversion - slight mod to the axle / spacer, now perfect. Big pile of parts now for painting and refurb.

I've also finalised the new underseat exhaust system [ Stainless ], just need to sort out a suitable can. I put a random Japanese silencer on just to run the engine up - and it sounds totally different to a "normal" BMW Kay !! In a nice way.

With the latest saga re: the sidecar collection / drunk driver - the Fighter is now firmly back on track to complete this year.

Big pile of parts now down at my pal's workshop and plans in place to purchase the last few bits and pieces. Then it's paint and detail [ just like that ! ]. ::)

I've decided against the Matt Orange - TOO many Hondas about ! The FO Green is top of the list although I recently came across the Matt Plum I saw on a crash helmet earlier this year. I might try to track that one down. Any ideas anyone ??? 8)

Busted Nut
Rossa Corsa Red and Black (maybe a touch of white to break it up).....Is it me or does that Kay look Fast as a Ferrari?

Desmo, you're a bad boy - you have a RED obsession ! ;)

Don't forget the TR1 60's Cafe Racer will be FO Red - with Gold / chrome / polish - ie typical 60's colourways.

I spotted the Matt Plum again the other day, but nobody can point me in the right direction - I'll get it eventually. :)

I think I'll re-title this thread "lack of progress BMW Fighter" ! ::)

After 8 months I finally got someone to commit to making me an axle spacer so I can fit the K1100 front forks with 4 pot Brembos and 5 spoke K1200S wheel. I am NOT a machinist, but if it takes the guy more than 30 minutes to make this piece ............................. :(

On the plus side all the original black plastic engine / accessory covers have been steam cleaned ready for a coat of Black wrinkle paint. It's a very fine and consistent wrinkle - a bit like the H-D engine parts. Problem is they've changed the specs and the paint finish is now gloss ....arrrggghhhhh.

OK - so a quick whizz over after the wrinkle is applied with a Satin Black should do it. Then it's power train dropped out for the same wrinkle / satin treatmeant and I can start re-assembly.

I forget everything when I see your Avatar !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

Seriously - in reality too many projects with limited funds spread thin and a BIG let down by so called friends who agreed to carry out work that I wasn't able to [ eg. spacer ].

It WILL be finished !! ;)

And the spacer is NOW being made !! ;D ;D

Albeit the guy is on holiday until the 20th. November, but he says he will do it "the week he gets back".

I sorted most of the parts out yesterday while I was down at AC's - and there doesn't appear to be anything missing from the pile of parts I took down there over 6 months ago 8).

I'm hoping with the upcoming power and lighting installation in my garage [ plus renewed enthusiasm now I have a leak free roof ] will give me the incentive I need to get on and finish - if not ALL my projects at least a couple in 2013. ;)

This was how it WAS going to look - Factory Race Rep style ........ until BMW brought out their own version [ S1000RR ] !!! They even used the same fairing as mine on the prototype [ Yam '09 R6 ].

I thought . "No I'll just be accused of copying", even though my project was part built nearly a year before BMW "leaked" pix of the 1000RR.

Then the switch to Fighter style. And that's where I'm at. The bike will be rolling on it's new K1100 forks [ 4 pot Brembos and K1200S 5 spoke wheels ] before Christmas - then it's a tear down for final painting detailing.

BC just spent 1/2 an hour reading through the build thread. In case you have not got your parts powder coated have a look here, you can buy the odd ball coloured powder cheaply, 1/2 kilo rather than 25kg. Usually it will be cheaper than your powdercoater sourcing it himself.
I've used the fine black on engine covers satin on other parts using a hobby powdercoater with good results

Thanx for the headsup on that Notlob ................ I've got a stack of stuff ready to go down to the powder coaters in Jan.

He's given me a "Bulk buy" price which is a big saving on my normal trade terms.

Most of the stuff will be Satin / Gloss Black - but I'm still looking for that "special" colour for the Kay. I'll check those guys out - thanx.

Just sorted out my BMW K1150GS wire spoked alloy rim wheels. I'll try them out and IF the front fits the new fork set up I 'll have an option - 5 spoke alloys or the wires.

I'll get the wires blasted and powder coated Gold in any case, as that'll make for a good price if I do decide to sell them.

Everything's moving forward again now - just bought a neat little detailing spray gun that will be ideal for the wrinkle finish to the engine and plastics.

Here's another one belonging to Ben Kingham who races the K100 in the BEARS series. Quite a few of my old parts on here !

Love that air intake

Yes, another of those "It can't be done" arseholes from the BMW Club.

Flow meter removed from that fuggin uggerly plastic housing and fed direct into the plenum, with the air intake up there grabbing air ! Small gauze filter inside to stop any Gixers being sucked in.

The spare motor on my bench MIGHT be getting an Eaton blower on the top there - plenty of space with all that OEM squitter removed.
