Believe me Kop, I couldn't agree more. But there are times I need to get somewhere in a reasonable amount of time as well.....
Dane, I just used it on my way into work (<10 minute ride). It held my phone ok and everything mounted easily, but I would feel better on a longer trip if the phone was fastened with something else as well. I'll probably get a freezer bag or something to go over the entire phone / mount, and use a wire tie on the bottom (especially since my phone isn't waterproof).
I've been using RAM mounts for a few years now and have mounted cameras in different positions on both long and short outings and even had some heavy "offs" (on mountain bikes) while they were mounted. Good strong stuff that keeps stuff secure big-time.
Take it out for some test rides at speed. Because it clips to your forks, it inherently imparts force on your steering. You've got a short ride to the Thaw - you'd be fine without it I did 10 days on the interstates without a fairing and was fine. Of course maybe that's just my romantic memory of the ride and I'll be cursing my naked BMW after a few hours on the road.
Been getting close to needing tires for the Yukon. So I started looking for a "economical" set of wheels, just to upgrade the look a little. It's the wifes daily, and neither of us are Rappers, so I wanted something closer to the OEM size. Not something taller than the wife.
I stumbled onto these on CL...
All four for $150, ugly rattlecan paintjob included.
I spent about an hour scrubbing most of the ugly off of them...
The paint adhered better to the rough surface inside the holes, so I need to wire wheel that out. But, a little Mothers and some new centercaps and they'll be ready to mount
Shino 705s. The price is great (both cost me $110 shipped) and quality is very good. The last bime I ran them on was a featherweight XS650 hardtail chopper. They were killer. Great traction on the street and when I'd venture off into the countryside amd the notoriously bad PA roads, they never gave up the ghost. I'm really interested to see how they do on the R5, bit I have no doubt that they'll work just fine.
