That's a neat lathe. I would throw a belt on it and be making chips (I did anyway, with the Chinese lathe I have)

Hard to see in the pic but the belt is on it and I had been making chips just minutes before . Yeah I know , video or it didn't happen :p

Replaced silver side panels with black

sweet laithe did you get the gearbox as well ?

Every time I need a spacer or just want to face something or drill and tap some rod, I go looking for one of those little lathes and never pull the trigger... keep hold of em guys they will get used.

Yeah I figure it will be good for small stuff and to learn on.

yup for the really small stuff (steel 3/4" and smaller),and alluminum (1-1/2" and smaller)it will proly spin up the high rpms needed quite smoothly....
just about the most important in the learning curves is using closer to the highest rpm's possible,in relation to tooling/material and actual cutting tool design rather than turning too slow ....i'm a highly qualified expert ...i could teach it,in fact i did, while on the job as shop leadman,to more than a few newbs ...sadly its a trade that has all but died ,manual machinist

I teach at a trade school and am a part of planning the new CNC program. (Been in or around a tool and die shop since I was a very young kid) Anyone that has ever been a machinist will say that even for CNC work, people need a solid understanding of manual machining. The problem is people don't see it as "high tech" or "shiney" enough to invest their time in it. All I know is I spent the last 3 years as a CNC programmer and machinist, and I wouldn't have been able to pick that up nearly as quickly if I hadn't cut my teeth on a Bridgeport knee mill and a 1942 South Bend lathe.

yup a well trained journeyman manual machinist has a feel for the machine and for the metal ,once a master they can actually "see" the feet per minute as a part spins,it computes in the brain in reference to the type of material, tooling and can adjust accordingly, by intuition, without even using all the maths
there is something quite satifying about hitting the optimum feed/speed rate
edit : i have never run a cnc, seen a few in opertation beside me as i manualed.they are incredible what they can do.things a manual machinst cannot, perfectly blended multiple axis for one , simply impossible
and in high production i can certainly see the importance of the calculations to get the optimum material removal and tool path speeds/tooling life
good onya for teaching ,sir !

Our local technical high school offers 10-week evening courses in various disciplines. I took lathe and milling. We learned on old equipment donated to the school by GE Jet Engine. Here's the hammer I made...

Looks like something mill spec and GSA wud pay ten grand each for, then sell for ten dollars at surplus lol... sweet hammer!!

Picked this little guy up over the weekend. Not really my style but it was cheap and had a bunch of new parts. Wasn't running but had 170lbs in each cylinder and had spark 8)

New Tires
New Mikuni VM28's
New Clutch
New Controls/levers
New cables
New Headlight/taillight
Also came with a Brand New Biltwell Gringo Helmet ;D

Bike just needs a new seat cover, side pannels, and battery.

So a hipster lost interest after spending money on all the things it didn't need to run, then you get to make it run and flip it. Lesson to hipsters, get it running before you dump cash on tires, cables, lights, yada yada yada

Dude... Get your priorities straight! Looking cool ALWAYS comes before functionality. Thats why I wear super uncomfortable clothes that look FABULOUS :-*

haha, Supposedly it was running 8 months ago. However there was almost TWICE as much oil as there should have been ??? I replaced the oil, and fired her up last night. I'm going to check the valves, timing etc. later this week.
