wow.. the new rubber really set it off.. this thing looks so aggressive! We really are getting treated to some awesome builds recently.. right as troy finishes up, BAM kanticoy comes out of nowhere with this insane build.

btw, where did you get your fork ears? I pretty much have settled on making my own because I can never find any that I really like, but those look pretty damn good.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Tahnks fellas! You guys rock!

Diesel, I won't be using those stripes or the honda logo at all. Pete was just helping me to see what the green looked like, which I do like. I was actually thinking of maybe a black middle stripe accented by off white or something to that effect. I'm still tossing color ideas around right now. We'll see

And Boom, I really appreciate the props man. I do like the "mantis" imagery. It suits it. And the headlight ears are the el cheapo Ebay ones with three holes, but I cut the front off just behind the first set of holes and mounted through the second holes. They are way too long IMO the way that they were stock. Mine were chrome, so I sanded them down and then powdered them black. Turned out good to me!

I appreciate the warm sentiments boys. You guys are why I keep coming back here!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

where did you get those gauges? how much? nice unique/original build.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks Aussie. They're cb350 gauges from Ebay somewhere. Ive had them for over a year, or I'd pull up the info for you...

Just letting you guys know that I apologize for the lack of updates....I have the flu, and it blows because I don't have any energy to work on the bike. I did get the head and valve cover taped up for paint today before my fever spiked again....But Dammit I''m determined! I'll let you know when this blows over. Wish me luck!!!!

Oh and BTW, I bought a bobber frame for my next build at the swap meet....so you guys won't be getting rid of me!!!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

man! i can not belive i have not seen this sucker before! just amazing i LOVE The stance you gave this bike ! i love that mono shock!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hope you are feeling better bro! Get some rest and take care of yourself.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

+1 on the getting better! A bobber next huh? I'll be looking forward to seeing that one come together!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

So f'n cool man, I have been thinking of a monoshock CB750, my swingarm design is a little different, but its just in my head right now! A lot of things change when it comes time to letting the sparks fly. Great craftsmanship!

I think I may have seen you say you were in Mobile,AL!
If so I would like to come by and check out this build, have a few beers, tell some war stories!
I am in Gulf Shores, but come to the mobile area a lot, my Dad has a house in Theodore, close to the high shcool.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey guys, thanks for the get well wishes! I actually feel a lot better today, and am even getting some motor painting done. I spent all day yesterday taping off the head and the valve cover (doesn't sound like much, but that's a feat when you have a 103 degree fever!), and today I'm letting the paint fly, so I'll try to get some good pics up in a bit. I'm taking the opportunity while the wife is gone to paint and bake them in the oven to cure the paint...if she saw me cooking parts in the oven, she'd have a cow!!!

But anyway, JRK, I was wondering when you would pop up on here, and you have to know I appreciate the compliments!

Deviant and Twisted, I'm in Birmingham, so if you guys are ever this far north, then hit me up, and I'll have the beer and barbecue waiting here for you. We usually make it to Gulf Shores once a year to unwind, so you know I'll be letting you guys know when I'm coming. Thanks for the props guys.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Alright boys and girls. It's been a minute...

The flu virus tried to kill me, but I prevail, and I am back to work on the bike again!

Actually, I've been pretty busy with it the past few days, but me walking around in my boxers with grease on me hovering over the sink cleaning motor bits doesn't make for very coo update photos, so I saved you guys the pain and suffering of that and waited to post pics of an update proper.

I've been hardcore in the middle of the motor and lemme tell you, it's a bitch. Cleaning these things isn't for the weak of heart, and I had two thoughts while doing it. The jugs sure would be easier to paint and clean if they were off of the bike, and I needed to inspect the cylinder walls for wear anyway, so I tore her down. Cylinders are immaculate, and so are the piston rings, so I'm good there. Also tore down the carbies, and lo and behold, both diaphragms look amazing! Thank god. With all of the chain slipper broken pieces I've been running into in these motors, I'm glad one of the Achilles heels are turning out to be on the positive side of things.

I tore down both sides of the motor and removed all of the e-start crap and also took apart the oil pump assembly and pickup screen and cleaned the bajeezus out of them too. The bike ran great when I tore it down, but a little preventative maintenance can never hurt. The old gaskets turned out to be the worst part aside from the cleaning. They were super glued on it seems, but now they are finally off and the motor is painted and ready for reassembly.

I painted the side covers and the valve cover with a high heat wrinkle paint. I love the way this stuff looks on the new Triumph motors, so I decided it would look wicked here. The jugs and motor body are gloss black. It took lots of taping and trips to the oven to get it all cured and ready to go, but I'm pleased with the results.

I scored a few cool goodies from the Barber's swap meet. I got some NOS chain tensioners for the rear and a NOS steering stem nut from a guy for $5. I also got a headlight visor for $1, and some really sweet patches (vintage) for $5. I also bought a frame for my next project, but I'll save that for a new thread.

All in all, the motor is almost there, so I have to finish grinding welds on the frame, and then it's time for disassembly and powder on the frame. I think I decided on a color scheme, but I'm gonna draw up a few pics for reference and then you guys can tell me what you think. So here's the progress shots, lemme know what ya think, and as always, thanks for tuning in! I'll be back at it hardcore again now, and I am stoked.

The weather is getting crisp...it's a balmy 34 degrees and cloudy here tonight!

Motor painting...the valve cover and side covers. Filled in the Honda logos for a subdued look:

The badass patch collection so far. Gotta find me a vintage jacket to put these on. The Joe Rocket has too much padding, and it was $350, so I just don't think it'll work!

Ordered some of this for the paint. After Troy's success, I couldn't resist. And I found it for $10 a can on Ebay.

That's it for now. Work tomorrow, but hopefully some assembly on Monday for the motor. That should give the paint enough time to cure up. I can't wait! She's coming along, just gotta keep on movin'! You guys take care and lemme know what ya think! You all rock as always.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

The black wrinkle paint looks great!!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks Marc, it really surpassed my expectations. I appreciate the props man.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Looking good Bud. I agree w/marc on the wrinkle paint. That kicks ass. I like how you filled in the plates. People will really be guessing. Awesome work my friend.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks Troy! I appreciate that man. The stuff seems very durable. It's hard as a rock. I'm happy so far! I just hope it goes back together as easy as it came apart!!!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Where did you accquire said high temp wrikle coat, and is it rattle can? I only ask 'cuz that is smoking hot. I'm stealing the chain paint rig too. Brilliant work as ever my friend. This thing is abso-f'n-loutely insane. Much props brother.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hahaha! Thanks Crescent!

The chain works amazingly...it allows you to rotate your work while you paint and to get all sides. It's perfect.

And yep, the wrinkle paint is a rattle can. It's made by VHT and called "Wrinkle Plus":
new_wrinkle.jpg

The best way to make it look the best is to spray it on, wait 10 minutes, then put it in the oven at 200 degrees for one hour. I tried a few methods, and this made the best, most consistent wrinkle coat. Looks great!

And brother, thanks for the compliments as always man. You're too kind.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I couldnt find the paint on ebay. Was it just a one time fluke, or was it a guy that regularly sells it?

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey boom, I don't know, the guy doesn't have any for sale right now, but his user name is pinwall_cycle_parts.

Maybe he gets some from time to time and sells it. He had 2 available when I bought them, so I grabbed both since it was like getting 2 for 1. I think it's like $17 a can regularly. I'll help keep an eye out for you.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Looking good man, glad to hear your feeling better! Yeah, that hat with that jacket kind of reminded me of my pee wee hockey coach circa 1978. :D

Hows the stink when cooking the parts in the oven? I've been thinking of a beater oven for the garage to cure paint and powder coat small parts etc. Just not sure where I'd put it.
