"RATTLE CAN" BLING! ...everything is here!

Hi, i would like a second opinion for the problem i just discovered. i followed the steps described in the first post. After sandblasting the tank to bare metal i only had to do a small spot with body filler. Sanded it all down to make it nice and smooth again. Washed and prepped it all following the guidelines and applied several coats of primer. So far so good. The touched up spot was not visible after primer.
About a week later i applied the first 12 coats of white paint and this morning a see that with the light at the good angle, the spot is visible again...

What to do now? Will this go away again after covering with another 12 coats?
Or do i have to sand it all down again and start over...

What type of primer did you use? More paint won't fix it. And 12 coats if base is an awful lot. Were they all wet coats?

I used filler, primer and paint all from the same brand; Motip.

About those 12 coats, I used themethod described at the beginning of this topic. start with a dust coat, wait a while,4 covering passes, wait and repeat 2 more times. This adds up to 12 covering coats. Or did I do it wrong...

Did you fan out the filler when you applied it? Based on the size of the spot I am going to assume no. Your best bet is going to be sand it a bit and hit it with some filler primer, reapply paint and go from there. The only other thing I would ask you is if you gave the filler enough time to cure before painting? If you do it too soon it will absorb the paint or worse contaminate the filler causing cosmetic issues like your pic shows. It's repairable with out taking everything down to metal, that's for sure, however you're going to have to do something if you want it look right again.

Anyone ever use this over appliance epoxy on a frame or rims?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but as a not native English speaker I was wondering what exactly you mean by 'did you fan out the filler'?
Shuold I just sand the spot a little bit or all the way down to the filler applied earlier and shoot some filler primer over this spot alone?

Curing time is probably not the problem since the filler was applied weeks before the primer or the paint.

Thanks for taking the time to help a noob with a paint job ;)

Fan out as in spread across a larger area than just the isolated problem. Kind of like when you puddy drywall. You do a larger area so it blends better.

I did that yes.

So can i just sand it down to the filler, apply primer and paint again, only on this spot?

I don't see why not. Was you filler a 2 part mix? I honestly can't think of what would cause this unless the paint had some chemical reaction with the filler like if it's not meant for paint, which is really silly. If it was me I would sand, spray filler primer and re spray. I wish I had some better advice but this is something I've not experienced.

Yeah, the filler was mixed with the hardener. In fact i did several spots and this is the only one to reappear.
it's a real mystery :)

Anyway, thanks for the advise. I'll give it a shot tonight.

Might there be a pinhole under there, or perhaps rusted through? Gas seeping into the paint could be bad.

No, not at all. the tank was sandblasted and was completely rust free. I followed the instructions on the packeging of the filler and the how to at the beginning of this thread.

I'm going to try sanding down to the filler, do the primer again and then the paint. This will take a few extra hours of work and days of curing, but in the end I hope it will pay off :)

I'll try and post some pics of the touch up as soon as I'm finished. Might be helpfull to others who encounter this problem.

Is it possible that it might be almost rusted through on the inside? Might be worth testing it with a magnet. Just seems odd that only the one spot is acting up.

Good point. I'll check that later tonight. However it was in an overall good shape but still worth to check

I have another question regarding to doing a two tone paint. I've read the entire thread and I'm a bit confused at this point.
I'm going to do a checkered flag pattern on the white tank. Should I clearcoat the white paint first before shooting the black squares? Some say yes, others say no, but what's the best way to go?

I was thinking about shooting the black without clearcoating the white paint. after the black paint has cured, apply a clearcoat and sand with 1200 grid.

Hi there from down under, I'm in the final stages of finishing my tank and have a question regarding Stickers & Pin Striping.

Should I "Clear" over them or just stick them on after the clear?

Cheers

Both ways will work just fine. If you choose to clear over them, they are better protected againt the elements and will stay beautifull much longer. The factory stickers are also applied before clear I believe.

I followed the steps as described in this post. Just before doing the final (2K) clearcoat I applied a fine stripe sticker and cleared right over it.

My XS650 tank did the same, it wasn't rust but a 'crinkle' that had been filed down then filled over. When I wanted to re-paint it I found almost the entire right side was filler
