Ratty Cafe - CX500 - Now not so Ratty :)

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

i love this build. I have been following it both here and on choppercharles. The cafe seat conversion is the the best i have seen. cant wait to see what else you have in store.

It has a plate on the back :)

Stock side covers. The whole front guard will be modded, I left the mud flap etc until I had the plates as there are regulations it has to comply to but I got the rear through so who knows ;)

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Damnit, with all of those smiley faces I knew it had to be the plate.

Looking good though, I dig the look of the motor popping out the sides, really has grown on me.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Jets turned up from Canada (Sirius) a few days ago and I got the pod filters local, now I either begin the teardown or just do the carbs and airbox area. I think it'll be the full teardown as I really want to get this bike done so I can ride it more often, apart from that there is an oil leak at the front of the engine just a seep but I have the gasket so I may as well rip into it. With all this in mind I squeezed in a ride on Sunday afternoon with a mate on his Suzuki GS500F. The two bikes are very similar in performance with the CX having a little more down low, I was pleasantly surprised that a 30 year old bike could hold its own against a similar capacity modern commuter bike. I guess when pushed the GS would handle better but the CX got more attention at the pub ;)

Anyway, a couple of pics.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Good stuff on getting it rego'd Steve! Best feeling ever, riding away from the RTA (and their awful lines!) on a bike you've built yourself.

As for the mechanical 'inspection', I swear that half the guys around here just make sure that all the switches and lights work then look under where you parked it to see if the oil has come out. Maybe even give it a start and a throttle blip or two... ;D

Hope the engine works goes smoothly - boingk

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

hmm, I thought I was in the wrong thread, thats not too ratty at all. Great work.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

So an hour and a half after I started with the spanners I ended up with this

IMG_1728.sized.jpg

Couple of issues, most painful one is the stuck idle air jets, half of one is snapped off so not adjustable at all and the other is just jammed, looks like another set of carbs is the easiest solution and then when I have a backup set I'll try and get the idle screws out. Anyway, hope to get the frame and engine painted etc over Christmas and then back in the frame. I'll try the carbs I have initially as I changed the jets today to deal with the pod filters but not being able to adjust the idle air jets is a bit of a pain.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

So after degreasing, scrubbing, degreasing, sanding, degreasing and even more degreasing I got bored with it and decided I needed to paint something to feel like I'd got somewhere :'(

Ended up detailing the two badges on the engine and painting the starter motor ::) Not a lot but it's something and the badges do look nice even on a grubby and partially stripped engine.

Hopefully the weekend will see the engine and frame painted and possibly some of it back together.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

hey man,
great build here, i have to agree with Jay when he said that he like the look of the engine sticking out from the bike, these bikes are growing on me two. between you and a couple more on here.
can't wait to see what the end looks like.
any way, good luck with the carbs,
later.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Carbs turned yesterday, everything looks good and best of all the air idle jets are easily adjusted. Soda blasted them today but ran out of the little soda I had so will finish them this afternoon. Also rejetted them and cleaned internally also adjusted to what I think is pretty close to correct. After the second blasting of the outside I'll give them a slight polish (not mirror finish) and thats another bit ready to go back on 8)

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Spent a bit of time and started painting the engine. I wanted to polish the valve covers but one has some gravel rash and they are both a bit ratty so decided paint would be more appropriate, might try and pick up another pair later though. The colour is Sepatone Aluminimum engine paint from Supercheap Auto (for those others in Aus).

I think this big lump of an engine painted like it is should look good hanging out of what will hopefully be a slim looking bike.

The black hangers are just resting there so I can see some contrast and will also be painted, probably tomorrow morning if I'm up to it (depends on tonight being new years eve and all) carbs will also get another soda blasting and a light polish.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Soda blasted the outside of the carbs and mounted, I'll give them a second going over tomorrow as there are still a few grubby spots but that's it, engine then gets put back together and the black bits like the frame and hangers get painted.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

That's a shiny engine

I'm a White Knight fan myself (Bunnings), but Super Cheap do have some good stuff (although usually their good stuff ain't that cheap ;D)

Nice work ;)

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Frame is painted and partially back together, called it a day here as a storm is brewing and I feel like a lunchtime beer ;D

Still need to do the side and centre stands but that's about it for frame paint.

Here's the pics of one side of the rear wheel blasted it this afternoon. Took about 10 minutes and $1.49AUD of baking soda

This is going to be a sweet bike. 8)

I hope so :)

Anyway, rear wheel blasted on both sides and final drive blasted and painted along with the drum brake, I wasn't sure if I should go with silver or black, the final drive looks good black I think but I'm not sure about the drum. Anyway both black for now.

I'm also starting to think about paint, my wife thinks black for that classic look but I'm not sure, still leaning towards a metallic British racing green or maybe burgandy and red.

Pics.
