I'm using paint stripper on mine as well; its a waste of sand to blast the frame... stripper, then use sandblaster on everything stripper didnt get at.
i have a savage that has not been on the road for several years. ex father in law gave it to me when he gave up riding. few months ago started to wonder if anyone had cafe'd one and found the ryca and this thread. i am a guy that doesnt like buying kits much like you, so i will be watching this thread intently to see how you do it. looking good so far
well, I finally have some time to do a little work on this so I'm about to head out to the store and pick up some foam for my bodywork layout. I have decided to build all the body parts from steel as opposed to my original thoughts of aluminum. After trying to work with the aluminum with the tools I have, it just wasn't happening (mostly just welding it). I am committed to doing this thing 100% on my own so paying someone else to do it is simply not an option for me. Steel, on the other hand, will work just fine for what I have in mind . I'll get some pics up after I shape some foam.
So I got a bit more done today and now I have all the body pieces sculpted in foam. It turned out pretty close to my sketches so I'm happy with the overall look. I may, however, make a few changes when I build these pieces out of steel. For one, I may lower the tail slightly to give it a sleeker, sexier look rather than the overly aggressive stance it has now. The seat will look different for sure, I just shaved one out real quick to have something on there. I may also make the tail a little bit wider and add a hard line or two to compliment the tank a little better. Thoughts?
Love the tank, love the seat!! Maybe a bit modern, but a great shapes, nice and curvy!!
I would keep the tail this high an d make a double seat pipe that exits trough those holes in the tail? Would be radical.
I am not a fan of what you've done below the seat. I'm a less = more kinda guy and I think that what you are doing there is way too much.
Love the tank, seat AND the side covers!!! Been lurkin' and lookin' at DTT for a while now and don't normally comment on much, but this is the the bomb!!! I am a big fan of modern twists to the old style cafe and this has that style big time. LOVE IT!
Are the cut outs in the back for exhaust or lights?Either way it will be cool, I am just curious.
Curious about the solid rear struts, are they for mock up?
Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys! OK, so after coming back to the bike today and looking it over again, I have made a few decisions. I am going to thin down the side panels and drop the rear about 2" (I don't like the tail being higher than the tank). I am also going to widen the tail to better compliment the tank. The bulges you see in the side panels are actually there to cover the exhaust which will exit just above the shocks. the two holes you see in the tail are for lights (59' Caddy bullet lights). the solid strut in the pictures is for mock-up purposes only, i will be using 13" progressive 412 series shocks when the time comes.
have you used 412 shocks before? they are made for a heavier bike... i have a few sets for harleys man they are like a rock, will be great for carving corners
I have not used them before, but the pair I'm looking at are for a sportster. I need something stiff though so they should be perfect. I think my biggest challenge here is going to be the rear sets. after looking at how this thing will be shaped, the most logical place for the pegs would be on the swing arm where the old passenger pegs were. the problem with this, of course, is figuring out placement of the shifter and rear brake controls. they can't have a pivot point on the swing arm because inadvertent shifting and braking might happen every time I hit a bump in the road....something to ponder.
Just be careful with Sportster shocks. They have very little travel, so you have to compensate for that with where you place the shocks on the swingarm. The Works Performance ones that I used on my project had only 2.1" of travel, the lower eye of the shock had to be over 4" in front of the rear axle to get my desired wheel travel of 5" (I can't recall the exact numbers now, but they are something like that) If you like, I can take more detailed measurements for you.
to be honest with what you are running i would say snag a set of Dyna shocks... they are fatter and will look much better... if you get a set of sporty stock shocks you can always cut out a coil...
Thanks for the advice guys. Joe, after looking at it, I agree with you. Dyna shocks would look way cooler. looks I'll be doing some more shock research...

I don't know who was saying 550, but your right, this is most definitely a 650 single. they started out in the 80's as the ls650, then became the ls640 Savage, after that it became known as the S40.
what shocks do you have on yours now? are they the 10 or 11 in? if they are either one i would be intrested in takeing them off your hands for my CB350 build
