Transfer duration is important, as is blowdown and with narrow ports, sometimes you need to run more duration than you would ideally want to use. That's where modern multi port motors are most useful. lots of time- area with wide ports, so you can tune the timing better.
Not all of us want to weld up crankcases and barrels to squeeze in extra ports. It's been amazing to see the sort of power that has been squeezed out of some old designs. What is even more interesting is how much power some tuners got out of those motors, back in the day without any of our modern tools.
Assuming that long transfer duration is to overcome lack of width, that forces the exhaust to be even longer duration to get enough blowdown pressure drop, so it's another story of optimizing things.
Zeke has been mocking my Bultaco saying it was a motorcycle with a drag tire. Since we had a baseline of making our best power with the Magee pipe of 28whp we installed it. Making it a real drag bike. I tried to give the honors of first start to Zeke and Bill but they wouldn’t fall for it. At 14:1 it was not that hard to kick over until...the shifter ratched off the cam because I had installed it wrong. I am sure ones the rings seat it will be more difficult to start. You can see the picture the bolt stop was underneath the cam and not in front of it. Broke the spring and buggered up the shifter stop bolt. Good news we have another shifter bolt and spring.
So we had a couple of other hiccups on first start. So we used the original magneto. So excited I left the choke on. We had just grabbed a plug and found out it was a resistor plug after it coughed fouled and gave up the ghost. No spark. Check the woodruff key and it was fine replace the plug with a non resistor plug. Lighting! Tonight we will put it through a few more heat cycles. It has one of BB’s mikuni carbs from his H2 and the plug was really wet. Testing and then to make a few expansion chambers, reluctor, lockup. Etc. What is more contagious than corona? 2t virus.
Yep and it started first kick with a resistor plug on a magneto...pretty amazing. We only finger tightened our head for our squish so I bet it is a little tighter but polling the head on a 2 stroke is so much easier than a 4!
See the cotter pin? When we rebuilt the Bultaco the first time the inside clutch cover had to be repaired with epoxy next to the the pin. It didn’t even dawn on me till we were staring at a hole in the side cover yesterday that this was what was wearing the inside cover.
We started it first kick again ran out of fuel and flooded it. After kicking it a dozen times Bill snickered, “you are getting quite the work out.” Zeke previously warned me that I was going to hurt myself on the perch for the air shifter and I have a huge mouse on the inside of my knee now. Lol.
We are going to pull the clutch tonight and dial it in with the electric starter. The transmission has its own completely sealed chamber with 600cc of 10w30. The clutch side only has 300cc 30 weight in it.
My thoughts are if we don’t run a dry clutch the to weld a holder for a seal to the outside of the side cover and then weld a socket to where the nut is...
Oh and the clutch doesn’t want to hold while kicking...needs a few more plates?

As long as you have spare primary drive gears, it's OK to run dry......... I suspect that the gears will wear out really fast without a little oil to keep them all wet and slippy.

Will keep it in oil and we are running way rich as we are seeing how many different spark plugs we can foul. I have ordered another carb as this is the H2 carb. Bill thinks it can handle the bigger flatslide. Have a few more heat cycles and we will put it in the Dyno and lean it out Thursday.
