The DT250 I should not have bought.

No Purple Hearts, No Blue Ribbons
I saw a Craigslist ad for a clean titled 1975 Yamaha DT250 for $500.

Went to check it out yesterday. Offered the guy $200, and brought it home.

Now, I don't own a truck, so in my Scion xB it went. Removed the front wheel and brake light...

Got it home and threw the front wheel back on...

What should I do with this thing? It has great compression. It is complete.
Should I scrap my RD400 project in favor of this DT? Should I throw the RD mags and front end on it? Run FZR brakes?

What say y'all?

Re: The DT250 I should not have bought.

Don't scrap the RD. I say build a cool tracker out of her. Maybe some shortened modern dirt bike usd forks and some 17"alloy wheels. Make a super motard esque bike. I can dig it.

I would have a tough time selling off a project like that........Unless you were to sell me that DT - I'll raise my offer to $240 (if you deliver it).

Kidding man. Signed up for this mayhem......

Scrapping an RD400 project in favor of a DT250 is madness, in my opinion. Stay with the RD, man!

So, I think I am going to sell my titled RD350 frame. I will then build this DT into a tracker. I will keep all of the stuff to make my RD400 race rep at a later date.

First things first, I need to get this beast running.

Bang for the buck the dt is a winner put the rd on ice till the winter. That way you can do it the way you want not the way you have to cause of a budgit. Run throu the dt and build a tracker at the end of the summer sell the dt to funds the rd. I got those rd400 mags if ya want them for the dt i also have a r5 and a rd400 front end you already got fzr brakes if you want it i have a dt400 motor

Brad,

I am thinking I am going to run all drum brakes on this little gem. So, the R5 front end would be most appreciated.

I also need a R5 front wheel and brake hub if any of y'all have one sitting around.

Yep. The RD400 has been shelved. It will be a race prep one day. Oh yes, It will be.

Every thing is the same except the spread in the triples and the fork tube length so run street bike uppers your lowers tubes and a rd triples if you are stuck on a drum front i got nothing wheel wise but your front fork is covered

I want to keep the FZR brakes for the RD project. I want to eventually pick up a FZR front end for it, and maybe do the mono-shock conversion.

So, I do not have the key to the gas cap.

Any ideas/suggestions on how to get the gas cap off without the key?

Most tank locks ( i know fo sho Honda's do) are just a simple mechanism that opens with about anything key-shaped. (metal pin, screwdriver, icecream-stick (yep, it does) and a bbq handle (yep, that to.) I'm on BradJ on this one. Good chance it'll open with a yamaha key or any other on your own keyring.

If not, drill the lock but i guess you figured that out by now.

p.s. It could be the lock is already open, (so it wont turn any further) but the cap is rotten stiff on the tank. Have you tried turning/pulling the cap at all?

So, I have tried three different Yamaha keys and still nothing. I think that it is just really stuck (frozen) on. The PO left the tank full of gas. I can only imagine how nasty it is in there.

I picked up a new battery today. Quickly realized that the ignition switch is bad. Bypassed the ignition switch. Still nothing. I have power up until the rectifier, but no power out of it. I also can't figure out where the power for the coil comes from. Black on this scoot is ground. I think black/white is switchable ground.

Anyone have any suggestions on why I am not getting power and how I get it?

This is the wiring diagram I am using.
