The Guitar and Musik Thread

Cheap Bastard
A bunch of people thought we needed this. So here it is. Ill post some pics of my stuff later. Lets get it out, Guitars, Amps, Ukes, Drum kits, whatever. If it carries a tune lets talk about it.

Gotta jump on getting some pics up, but for now here's a little self promotion, set from a solo acoustic gig I did here in Providence a bit back, starts a bit weak but give it a chance, you'll like the end of the first track.

Sweet idea! Ill have to post some pics after barber.

My home studio. Been a professional musician/recording engineer for 20 years. Built this studio in my house a few years ago when I closed my other one down to go work for a production company. All staggered stud walls with multiple layers of dry wall and sound mat, floating on Drycore flooring (it's in the basement).

^ Dig the studio! Tell me more about that Univox amp.

This is my main guitar, '79 Gibson "The" SG with an original T-top in the neck and an SD invader in the bridge, I redid the electronics with stuff from RS electronics.

I have others, just not many good pics, and nothing all that special. This is a pic I took when I was moving last month, this is almost all of my guitars, maybe half my amps, and none of my pedals.

Amps are my favorite part of a rig... I learned a ton of vacuum tube theory when I was 16 and have been designing, building, and modifying amps ever since. If anyone ever has any tube amp questions, I probably have an answer! I'm currently bandless so most of the stuff I have is vintage or smaller stuff I've built, nothing over 25/30 watts which is just fine for practice and jamming with people. My current project is a scratch built 5C1 champ I haven't had time to work on in forever, haha.

I don't know a ton about it. Someone gave it to me because it didn't work. Turned out they used cheap paper capacitors in them. I had a buddy of my recap the whole thing with nice ceramic caps and it works great. It's from the 60's, All Tube (six as I recall), has a 2 -12 cab, optical tremolo and spring verb. The footswitch works even. When I record with it I mic it with an old Turner dynamic that I have thru a UA preamp to complete the retro signal chain. Fuckin' pimpin surf sound.

OK, I'll throw my hat into the ring. I have an old Teisco short scale bass that was tossed inot the dumpster where I live. It was in horrible shape, so I did a complete rebuild and converted it into a fretless bass. This is it in my old lab with an old tube amp that my mother-in-law had in her house.

Here is some of my stuff.

Left to right

89 MIK Squire Strat Dumpster Find. All it needed was a new trem block and pick guard. Sounds like the real thing. Made in the Samick factory.

82 MIJ Squire Buller $50CL find. Lowest action with no Buzz ever. Refinished from a horrible flame job.

88 MIK Squire Tele.Made in the Samick factory. Warmest neck pick up I have.

whatever happened to sammick?
one of my guitars is a sammick strat, pretty decent, i know they had some high end stuff but very rarely found, did they shut down?

Yeah, I regret selling my Samick firebird. But it was so top heavy it would drop whenever I let the neck go. Sweet looking though.

They are still around, they sell under the Greg Bennet and Samick brand and still make pianos and are still sub contractors for other companies.

Samick is now more of a manufacturing company. They make a lot of the Epiphone and Squire guitars. They are actually one of the largest manufacturers in the world.

Samick use to make Japanese Squires in the 90's that are about the best guitars I've played.
