Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
So - clarified with Ryan who did the head. Exhaust valves are stock size - ports were smoothed out (XS exhaust ports have a ridge in them from the factory which is now gone) and coated with a ceramic thermal coating.
Cleaning up the garage today and then will recruit someone to come help me haul this 150 pound lump from my 2nd floor spare bedroom/office to the garage in the back and swap the engine out sometime this week.
Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
Unbolted bunch of stuff from the old engine prepping it for removal. Exhaust, ignition, kicker, shifter, carbs blah blah blah. Have to drain the oil and pull off the sidecovers, clutch, rotor and stator still.
Now someone come to my house and help me lift this thing!
Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
Funny, putting it into the frame didn't magically transform the bike into a 1950's Norton race bike, but it's a nice clean engine
Will get a pic probably tomorrow evening when I have more time to start moving clutches etc. over from the old engine to this one and figure out where I'm going to stash two giant green coils.
Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
Pics as promised. Need a 29mm socket for my clutch nut. My nut's too big.
Hoping this one stays as clean as it is at the moment, aside from road grime. It would be nice to have a leak-free engine. Crossing my fingers - being very particular with gasket adhesive, sealant, copper washers as needed etc. but I'm not holding my breath.
Gotta sort out where to put the coils, but aside from that, it's all just bolting stuff back together now.
Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
Eagle eyes will note I don't have the shifter detent spring mounted at the moment. Lost the one from this engine somewhere, and the one on my old engine is behind the clutch basket so it will be transferred over. They're discontinued, and MikesXS in Canada is out of stock at the moment. But by the time comes to put the old engine back together (taking it apart for soda blasting, taller 5th gear, new gaskets/seals) I'll have one for it.
Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
Made some progress tonight.
Got the clutch moved over, sprocket and all the bits and bobs cinched down and side covers on the engine.
Installed the ignition / camshaft end cups, advance rod, advance mechanism and Pamco (which I haven't configured, just bolted it on to make sure it all fit and to not lose any bits)
That doesn't sound like much does it But there were a few 1 step forward 2 steps back moments with the clutch and kickstarter mechanism, but everything is as it should be now.
So now it's dialing in the Pamco for initial start, carbs back on, mount the coils, plug in the ignition, put some oil in the engine, slap the pipes back on and see if this thing will run.
Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
Pics don't say much as it just looks like another XS (unless you know what you're looking at and see the cylinders are different) but there will definitely be some hi-fi hi-def video of the beast firing up for the first time (or of me swearing and breaking a sweat kicking it over and over and over again).
