Does anyone have a good source for cb550 engine components? I'm having a heck of a time getting parts for this engine. I had to order the primary chain 4x before I found a place that actually had one. Most of the part are discontinued.

I have found the best thing to do is find an online source that will tell you the actual Honda part number, then get over to Honda. I live in Ontario, Canada and this is how I have been doing my Honda shopping. My dealership in particular do not have any reference materials past 1995 for any Honda bike... not much an "old" Honda shop. So, as long as I take an actual Honda part number, they can reference and get the part wherever it may be. BikeBandit.com is a good place to find out if the part is disco'd or not (greyed out means NLA), without having to take a trip for sure disappointment purposes! I have a 1973 CB500 and have been amazed at what is actually still available... maybe a little dusty.. but available, and usually cheaper than online as most places think this stuff is NLA.

By the way - Great f-ing build man! Inspiring me for my next build ('74 CB550), which will be a complete custom like yours. Very nice!
 
Got all the chains, seals, rings and gaskets and motor casing powder coated. Motor is going back together. Cleaning all the parts from the soda blasting too.

I thought it very strange, but in the Honda Manual it specifically states to put the gears in the upper case first and then mate the two together. I scratched my head for a very long while but thought I should do it since the bearing clips and plugs are in the top case - or go "in" the top case. I managed to do it (holding the gears in with my fingers and flipping it over and onto the bottom case) with only one bearing not seating properly in to the plug. A little spinny-spinny and it was all together and loving each other. Fairly easy engine to work on. I did manage to get the non-adjusting cam chain guide in backwards however. Thankfully noticed before torquing everything down. Looking good SpeedBump!

Nice! I just threw the gears in there after cleaning. Haven't tried to fit the too and bottom. I was wondering how I would be able to get the forks to line up. Maybe this will be easier.

That was my initial thought as well. I figured it would be rather difficult to fit the top in and get the forks to line up, etc. I didn't want to have to fight with it with all the sealant and stuff on the cases. The last thing I wanted to do was smudge some gasket maker into an oil valley, etc. As I said, I put them in the top, then grabbed ahold of everything with my hands and flipped it over and placed it on. Try to get the front seated in first (crank area), seemed to allow the rear to sink into place without much effort. Good luck!
 
Gasket kit, rings, honed cylinder, complete gasket kit, all new seals, cyclex 10mm offset sprocket, lapped valves, replaced bent valves and guides, powder coated case, polished bolt kit wire brushed all other bolt and other stuff I can't think of.

Little update. Waiting on title stuff before I send frame to powder coating.

Made a plate to protect the carbs.

Does anyone know where I can find a jet kit for this 1978 cb550k? I've looked high and low all over the Internet and can't find a thing.
