The beads on the Van Van tires were insanely hard to get off, even with the two piece wheels. I had to bring them to a tire shop and even they had a tough time getting 'em off.
The ATV tires I'm running are beastly though. Apparently you can run a TW rear tire on the stock Van Van front wheel, too.
Motor came in seemingly un-harmed from Texas today. This one "supposedly" ran with 1800 miles on the ticker. Seller thinks it needs a stator as it would run until it got hot and then quit, but run again after it cooled off. To me it sounds like it could be an ignition coil too. Either way, everything looks in order, including red rtv on a case cover gasket. Ill likely just mount it up without digging to far into it. If a problem presents itself ill fix it, but less a valve adjust and oil change, I'll likely leave it alone until I am given a reason otherwise.
Got the engine stuck back in for some more mockup work, and have to sort the wiring.
I decided that since I still want this to be a capable off-road machine, the stock airbox is probably the best way to go since it brings the water chug level up higher over the pod filter option, and it acts as an inner fender as well. I have some fab work to do though, as I build a new subframe and the mounts went bye bye with the old one, and my new rear mud flap mount is in the way, so I'll have to sort something different there as well. The stock box is ugly, so some vintage style side covers will be made to cover it.
Also, I decided to order this tire instead of the ones posted earlier. It doesn't look as "cool" as the mud tires, but I'm liking the rounded profile and knobbies on the sidewall. May help keep it from washing on a corner better. Either way, an atv tire will be a trade off performance wise on a bike, but while it may not corner on an mx track as well as the stocker (as if I'm worried about that on a 17 h.p. dual sport) it should help it tractor through mud, snow and single track better.
Still undecided on what tire ill run out front, and it may possibly stay in stock form out front until after I get this thing moving under its own power.
Iron Pony had these on close out for $40. It's kind of a hard compound MX Tire but it will get me by until I figure out what I'm doing with the Fat Tire front end conversion. Should be plenty meaty. Going to drop it off at the tire place tomorrow to have the stock tire pulled so that I can bring the wheel back home to true it up and drill it for a rim lock, then back to the shop to have it mounted. On a stock tw200 with the "hugger" type front fender it wouldn't fit, but I'm making a bracket to do a high fender mount so it shouldn't be an issue.
Started working on the rear wheel mod. Cut the center out of the trailer wheel, ill post up more detailed pictures of what im doing with that later on.
Couldn't help but to mount up the tire up. It spooned on easy enough, but took a little boom juice to seat it. Its a little less than 2" taller than the stock. May play around with a beadlock too, depending on whether or not it tries to spin the rim at low psi.
Got a little time to tinker around in the shop today. I trued up the front wheel. I think there were only about 5 spokes that weren't lose. None of the nipples were seized up at least. Also drilled for a rim lock. Getting the tire mounted up tomorrow.
Also, went ahead and put in New tapered neck bearings, as the balls in the bottom were completely missing. Threw on a set of atv bend high bars that I grabbed for $5 at mid Ohio. They were destined for my dr650, but they will do the trick on the tw for now. A bird in the hand and what not.
Haha several people on the tw200 facebook page have said that it looks like a big z 50. Im guessing the z50-esque red atc tank has a bit to do with that. Maybe I leave it red just to keep people guessing
