the seat was actually hand made for my bob... but i did not use it cause i got a bare bones seat for it... so i figured WHAT IS BETTER THAN THAT FOR THE CAFE/BOB
man... that looks awesome! how did you finalize your tank dents? I can not seem to get them perfectly smooth? i have shot a layer of primer on it to get a better idea of the flaws... now i could use a bit of help...
my build:
will be same colors, high flake gold and gloss black:
http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=5242.0
i smoothed it as much as i could with fine sand paper and then i used some filler primer (duplicolor's FP 101 Gray Primer Surfacer: http://www.duplicolor.com/products/primer.html) to smooth it out even further. i am not sure yet how it will look when done, but i'll keep you posted.
i also cut a hole so i can use a seat cowl as a tool storage. it was not that difficult to cut the hole out. i just used a very sharp utility knife and slowly worked my way until i cut through the fiberglass.
the first layer of paint on the seat (actually, it was 3 layers). i need to wet-sand it now and prepare it for the stripes:
also primed the tank:
and put three layers of gloss black with a couple of layers of clear. i have to wet-sand it as well and smooth out a small drip that i got. i guess i will have to paint it with at least one more layer of black before i paint the stripes on.
maybe i get some time this weekend to put a few layers of paint so it can dry during the week.
got some new acorn nuts for the upper bolt on the rear shocks. the new nuts were a bit too short, so i put a couple of large washers:
and
and the front forks are reassembled, mounted on, and filled with oil:
i did use the masking tape and duct tape over it on front fork upper bolts and it worked. i was an idiot and after i tightened them without scratching anything i figured out i forgot to put a small rubber piece that comes on top of headlight ears. so, i had to unscrew the bolts and screw them back on. with all that work on painted bolts, i got a couple of smaller scratches in them. still have not decided whether i am going to repaint them or just fix them a bit while they are on.
I may have missed the explanation...you are wrapping the painted bolts in masking tape then duct tape before putting a wrench on them? Is that correct?
Bike looks great! i was just looking at posts and i could not stop reading this one. glad it was 5 pages into it before i started. but now i need to know what happens next!
thanks for all the encouragement. haven't had any time to work on the bike lately. between having to be at work again, spending time with wifee, and riding, not much time for anything else.
but, i was able to throw some paint on the hubs a while back and they are dry now. put about three coats of self-etching primer, three coats of gloss black and a couple of coats of clear. the results:
one of the rear brake shoes is out (the braking compound unglued) and i ordered a new set. waiting for it to arrive so i can put the hubs back together. i should be putting new rubbers on the tires very soon.
the project is moving along just fine and with some luck it will be on the road by the end of the month.
i'll do some work today and hopefully will get some pics to post later on tonight.
I just got a hold of the same color/year/miles on motor, bike as you started out with. This project is very inspiring and i cant wait to see what it ends up like!
