can you take a pic of the bike with the seat and the tank on it so I can see how it looks. So far it looks real good. thanks

Sorry I missed you guys last night Beli! Whay don't you post some pics of your new rubber on the rims? I am bitting at the bit to see them on the rims....

santa claus (jesse) came by a few nights ago and delivered the goodies:

things coming along just fine...

did a little work on saturday...

had to clean and paint a load of smaller pieces. on the list were the headlight bezel, brake stop for both the rear and the front hub, rear and front brake arms, gas cap, tach and speedo rings, points covers, and some smaller random parts.

took a long time to clean them and prep for painting:

some pieces are primed and some have ground coat for the yellow (gold) paint to come on:

some results:

here is a gas cap before:

more to come...

Damn those rims turned out great along with all the little painted pieces. HURRY UP AND GET THIS DAMN BIKE DONE!! I am super excited to see the Bee Done....

I also wonder about the rims... what kind of paint did you use... normal paint would have to have a added flex to allow for the spokes to move, or else, I am told, it will just chip off? that is why i always tear mine down and powder.... if this works for you I WILL DO THE SAME (but in white)... picked up a can of the gold last night, have to say BRIGHT as hell... also my paint for the bike came got a heavy flake from house of color so i will mix that in my gold for the 70's look, then got a PPG rootbeer candy, just need the 2.0 tip for my gun and i can start shooting... man your bike looks great man... can not wait to see the finish product! ....
one other little trick i know that you may be intrested in... i am taking all my cases off and heads polishing them up to 800 grit so it still has a ruff look, then hitting that with a 500* degree clear engine paint... then into the oven at 700* for an hour... this will actually Gold or yellow the clear... gives it a very cool effect and will only get better in time... that way you can completely eliminate all the chrome... that is my plan figured you may want to check it out as well!

none of the paint came off, but then again, i did not install them myself. a buddy of mine that works as a bmw/ducati dealership put them on. he said the front rim got scratched a bit, but i cannot find it. i guess it is under the tire. as for paint flexing, not sure. i would suppose that it doesn't, but i have to taken the bike out yet. when i do for a while, i'll let you know whether it chips/breaks or not. to answer your question about the paint, i prepped the wheels, hit them with 3 coats of self-etching primer (duplicolor), then 3 coats of gloss black engine enamel (duplicolor) and then 3 coats of clear (duplicolor engine enamel).

since i am posting already, here are some more pics of progress:

put the front brake arm on the wheel:

the front wheel is on the bike. yeah......

also, it's been a week since i put the last coat of clear, so it means i can wet-sand it and get it ready for further work. i hit the tank and the seat with 1000 grit wet sandpaper. it took a while, but the results are great. smooth as a baby's butt. i put the tank and the seat on the bike to start figuring out the location of the stripe. well, here are the tank and seat on the bike. they don't look shiny because they still need to get a few more coats of clear.

later,

g.

did some more work.

the speedo that i got with the bike was missing a reset "button" for the trip odometer. i got a different speedo at a local used parts store for $10 and took the trip odometer with the button out. i opened the old speedo and put the new trip odometer in. was thinking about painting all the parts separately and then assembling the speedo, but given the large likelihood of scratching it while putting it back together, i decided to put it together first and then paint it. so, i cleaned the speedo while it was apart and since i did not even open the tach, i just cleaned it while it was intact.

i masked it and did another wipe with mineral spirits and acetone.

speedo ready for paint:

tach ready for paint:

both will be gloss black with a gold/yellow bezel.

i also cleaned the crank and prepped it for painting:

DSCN6437.jpg

next came prep work for painting the stripes on the tank and the seat. i used a rubber band that went around the tank so that i could get a center line and then used a measuring tape to mark off edges for the stripes.

DSCN6426.jpg

i used a blue masking tape to mask off outer edges and 1/8" masking tape (from the hobby store - used for painting model cars/planes) to separate the wide and the narrow stripe.

masked tank:

masked seat:

DSCN6429.jpg

then i used some newspaper to mask off the surrounding area:

DSCN6432.jpg

ready to be hit with paint....

and the ground metalcast comes on:

the seat gets 3 coats:

DSCN6434.jpg

and the tank as well:

DSCN6438.jpg

next came 3 coats of metalcast yellow:

and

DSCN6441.jpg

also found some time to clean up the rear sprocket and related smaller pieces. mostly used WD40 and a maroon scotch brite pad:

DSCN6443.jpg

well, stripes turned out nice.

the tank:

the seat:

and this is how it will sit on the bike:

getting closer.......

just to give you an idea of how shiny it should be in the end...

i wet-sanded the headlight bucket with 1000 grit (just like the tank and the seat) and hit it with three coats of clear.

the result is a rather deep shine:

DSCN6451.jpg

since i am doing the same with the tank and the seat, it should turn fairly similar to that. i just have to wait 7 days for the stripes to dry (i also hit it with 2 coats of clear after the yellow color) so i can put some clear over the entire tank.

Hell yea, dude. I have been waiting to see this combo come together for weeks. Looking real sharp man.
