cleaned up the rear sprocket and put it on the rear wheel:

finally got around to paint the starter (duplicolor low gloss black):

i was going to pain the carbs, but after talking to a buddy of mine suggested i rather not since the paint would most likely not stick and would easily come off from all the gas vapors. but, the carbs caps were so rusted and pitted that i had to at least paint them.

after a lot of cleaning with wd-40, maroon scotch brite and steel wool, exhausts looked respectable and ready for some black paint:

I'm really interested to see how this paint holds up--especially the wheels and engine paint. The rattle can paint is so soft, but then again, you may get different results. If you get the stuff to stick well in the long term, you'll be a god around here...

a buddy of mine (jesse that put the rubber on the wheels) came over last night as i was preparing to put the chain on and helped me out.

we had to cut some links off - ground a pin and punched it out. i thought it would have been more difficult, but it was actually not all that.

Hey could you explain step by step how to setup that electrolysis setup and how it works for us dopes out there. I would really like to try it on a fuel tank I was thinking of scrapping due to internal rust. Thanks, MBS

hey MBS, i actually followed this writeup http://twinoak.altelco.net/~jacil/clay/motorcycle/KElecSetup.html

i filled the tank with arm & hammer washing soda and warm water, fitted a cut-up 1/2 gallon milk container so that the sacrificial anode would not touch the tank, attached a wire to the base of the tank (the little piece where the rubber piece holds it on the bike) and attached a battery charger to the whole thing. for the sacrificial anode i used a rod that connects footpegs (removed it anyhow since i am using rearsets). make sure that the sacrificial anode is not touching the tank. all the other details are provided on the linked page.

bike is coming along nicely. hopefully i get some time tomorrow to post some more pics. carbs are next on the list and then it will be almost complete (minus the taillight and the license plate bracket). i was wiring it up and noticed that the front lever is missing a brake switch, so i either have to go to the paddy and pull one out or go to radio shack and fab something. oh, one more thing, the front headlight has a burnt low beam. maybe i'll just wait for the winter to fix that and for now lower the high beam.

last weekend i ed and me rode down to greg's (ohiocaferacers.com) place since he is the man for welding aluminum. also, to have some beers. in any case, since i am using rearsets from a cbr900, brake linkage is located at 9 o'clock and i really needed it to be at 12. so, greg cut the little tab off with his dremel tool:

fits nicely and now it's time to get a rod that does not bend so the rear brake can be reliable. as of now, i have the old brake rod bent and connected, but it tweaks under pressure and does not really brake that good.

i figured i would try reusing old cables and if it does not work out, i'll get some new over the winter. i properly lubed all the cables and i had some liquid grease that i use to lube my mountain bike chain:

since cables were tan/gray, i decided to wrap them in black gorilla tape. hopefully it holds up:

since i am using cbr900 rearsets, i had to extend the shift rod. initially i cut the original short rod and inserted an aluminum rod in the middle (a piece that was left over after cutting the original brake linkage). however, the joint that is attached to the transmission was too long to clear the pipes, so i had to clean up the original joint that was on the bike and re-cut and thread the shift rod so it would fit.

did some work on the seat pan:

i created a seat pan from fiberglass when i was making the seat. as a cushion, i am using the thickest carpet under-padding that i could find at lowe's. it was dirt cheap and plenty leftover. btw, i used two layers and glued everything with spray adhesive.

it holds up real real well to the heat and crap the bike throws at it... here are some pics of it on my HD... people ask me all the time where i found black braided cables... hell bud you can do the whole bike for like 4 bucks! if i was you i would just wrap this right around the tape... then just a few small back zip ties and you are done!

the pods that i put instead of stock air filter are cheapo emgo's. they were $8 a piece so not a biggie. if they won't work well, i'll get some k&n's.

as far as i've heard about 350's, they don't need to be rejetted. greg from http://www.ohiocaferacers.com/, who is a carb guru, said that you only need to adjust it properly and that it will run like a champ. i'll have him come over for some beers and carbs adjustment. btw, if you need any work done on your carbs, he is the man (what a shameless promotion ;) ).
 
man to be honest i can not recall if i got the 1/4 or the 1/8... well i know i ordered both but i can not recall what one i used... i know i used 1/4 on my brake lines... god man... your bike is such a motivation for my build! great work brother great work!
 
Need to get some video up of your beast! While hanging out with Beli last night I got to hear the beast run, see it ran up and down the street (no rear brake light) and roll my fat ass up and down the street on it. All I can say is, WELL DONE GORAN! I am super impressed with what you were able to create! I can not wait to get video up so everyone else can see and hear your beast in action.......
