I think it's time to let the cat out of the bag on why I can't come to Alabama.
For the last 20 years since my wife and I moved away from our family cottages (parent's places that we grew up at) we've wanted our own place.
This year was the year to make it happen. Things sort of fell into place and the right property presented itself. We jumped on the opportunity, and are now cottage owners. We close in a couple of weeks. I need to spend time up there preparing it for the long cold Canadian winter, and the Mama Tried event lands on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend which is a 4 day weekend for my daughter from school.
So we'll be up a the cottage enjoying some family time, or rather working like donkeys to make sure it's buttoned down properly for winter.
I'm trying to provide my daughter with the same sorts of experiences I was lucky enough to have growing up. My father bought property and built our cottage years before I was even born. Back then in the late 60's $500 bought you a lakefront property and nobody paid any attention to what you were building. So it was a reasonable thing to do, even if you were earning $400 a month.
Now, it's a lot more expensive and difficult to even start. So, it took me 20 years longer, and cost a lot more, but the place is ready to use and enjoy.
BTW - it's easy road access, so I fully expect to have plenty of motorcycle riding guests show up unannounced. I'll be disappointed if that doesn't happen. We're 1/2 way between Toronto and Ottawa.
First pic is my father building our family cottage nearly 60 years ago out of used lumber he scrounged from various building sites and friends. Mine took a lot less physical effort and a lot more time.
