Restomodding a 74 CL360

I'm bored at work, so I'm looking at the profile pic of the bike so far. Two things are bugging me.

One is the front screw that holds the heat shield in place is missing, as I couldn't get the holes lined up to put the original screw in. Not sure how to fix that.

The other is since I flattened the seat, it looks way out of proportion to the tank. Now that I'm thinking about it, from an aesthetics viewpoint, everything from the rear shock back looks like it really doesn't belong on the bike. I did the tail chop on my Monster 696, I think this will be more involved. Hmm.

Hey bud, quick question on your CX, sorry to side track;

The above posts about the bog, have you removed airbox? Pods? rejetted? I'm in the middle of mine now, just got the jets main 90/120 for each side, will be putting them in later in the week

According to the PO, it's bone stock. I haven't checked the air filter yet, but oil and oil filter have been changed by me.

Hmm.. Ya maybe something in there is clogged. It's pretty strait forward to clean. Be sure to not separate the carbs unless you want to re-sync them, I didn't have to when I did mine; depends how bad or good it is I guess.

I did the jump to pods, rejetting 90/120 for a baseline and going from there

I hate waiting. The mufflers and new pods should be here tomorrow, along with the new handlebars for the CX500. No more new stuff until I move, unless I start selling stuff.

Mufflers and new pods came. Pods are way too big so the old ones are back on. Mufflers fit, but I need some muffler clamps, so yet another Dime City order. I can actually hear myself think when the bike is running. But still no love past 5000 rpm. Tell me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing that timing isn't advancing, so how do I fix it? I haven't played with a points ignitions system since 1993.

I pulled the plugs today. Black, sooty ends, which I think mean the bike is running rich. Am I right? So it's bogging down at 5000. Usually I'm pretty good at troubleshooting, but I only get an hour at a time to spend on this bike.

Assuming your timing and compression numbers are correct, then sooty insulators around the center electrode is often a sign of running too rich.

Technically, it's a sign of the combustion being too cold, which can be related to retarded timing, low compression, and/or too much fuel.

It's always a good idea to rule out timing and compression before attributing any engine conditions to fuel/air mixture; Mainly because timing and compression are so easy to test.

Thanks. I'm picking up a timing light some time this week. Stupid weather is going to screw things up around here the next 48 hours.

If you can, get a cheap, ugly looking alternator cover (for 360 or 350) and drill a hole in the right place. You can check timing with a timing light and keep oil from splashing all over.

??? That's actually a good idea. There's a guy near me with a bunch of old Honda parts, he may have a spare cover somewhere in his stockpile. Thanks!

I haven't been able to hit the parts store or anything else lately, but one thing has been bugging me. The two diaphragms both have cuts in the exact same spot, pretty close to the centers. Are they supposed to be there?

Nope. Any holes in the diaphragms will compromise their operation.

Interesting. Time for new ones then. It's just money, right? I saw that hondacb360.com has some reproduction ones, $40 a piece. Does anyone else carry them?

Would that explain the bogging down at 5000 rpm?

Yep, slides won't lift properly
I've used a LOT of the JBM diaphragms, they work well and are less than $50.00 a pair (sorry CB360.com, I do get a LOT of carb 'O" ring kits from you though ;) )

I hate PayPal for a lot of reasons. JBM's web site is confusing but it looks like they'll be getting my business. We'll see how it works.
