I thought this was pretty cool, think of it as a 2 stroke with the only moving part being the piston and the crank. Supposedly it produces quite a bit of horsepower and torque. I had to link it since i can't seem to be able to save an animation of it to post on here. http://bourke-engine.com/ani.htm

I thought it was a beautiful bike when i first saw it, but the horsepower rating on the bike was a lil disappointing to me. If i'm not mistaken it was only like 50hp.
I propose a harmless, and yet profound consideration....
Do you ride a bike simply for the HP?... or simply because you love to ride... or simply because the bike is a piece of cafe racer art... the archetypical racer. I think to the italians, it was more about finding a harmony between the good looks and ridability. Also, if a bike this sexy is already in the "almost-too-expensive' category... what would you be willing to pay for double the horsepower? I guess with italians, you have three ways of having a bike/car... 1. good-looking, but not so powerful, but afforadble... 2. Not so good-looking but powerful, and also still affordable.. or 3. Sexy and powerful.. and as we all know from Ducati, MV Agusta, and Ferrari, that if it's Italian, and Looks good, and goes good... it's gunna cost ya.
Guess this Guzzi racer is aimed at the people that are spending R1 money but yet want a cafe look like Benelli TNT or MotoMorini... so, they cutback the motor tech... cheaper production, more punters. Safe marketing in this unstable economic climate ;)
Oh.. and the other things we can consider.. sure, it had less rated BHP.. but it's Guzzi... it's got top of the line components all throughout.. suspension, brakes, sitting position... sure, it may only be 50BHP, but I'm sure it's all very usable...

Its actually a preference like you said, for me I'm quite a big guy so horsepower matters a lil more than usual. Hence the reason i don't ride anything under 500cc it just feels a bit anemic to me usually. Now i understand that is not the case for everyone. Like i said its a beautiful bike and i love the styling. Now i have never riden a guzzi before so i don't know how the bikes really ride and yes its short sited of me to be disappointed in 50hp, but when you think of modern technology I would expect at leat 70hp minimum for your typical bike with at least 750cc. Agian though, like you said the way the power is delivered could make all the difference in the world.

getting a little off topic here, but while we are talking about guzzi's...

Here's one:

The X-43 - a scramjet-powered unmanned experimental hypersonic aircraft.

It was designed to operate at speeds above Mach 7.

They made 3 protoypes at about 8 ft long. First one they pulled the plug midflight and destroyed due to miscalculations. Second one, flew for 10 seconds and set a speed record (which I don't know, but I believe was around Mach 7). And the third, flew about 10 seconds again, reaching a speed of 7,546 mph or Mach 9.8!

To get it in the air, they (by they I mean my dad was part of the company that did it!) built an adapter for a Pegasus rocket. Mounted the X-43 to it and then put that under the wing of a B-52. It was launched at about 43000 feet for flight testing.

Each one crashed, as intended, into the Pacific. The total cost on the project: $230 million.

Here's a slightly diffrenttake on a twin engine drag bike.

Saw this dirt drag bike at a rally a few years back. Looks scary.

Kinda makes sence if you realize that early radial engine the crankshaft was stationary and the cylinders rotate, better ballance, less vibration and better cooling on the fins... think WWI biplanes.

The staionary crank/ rotating cylinders didn't last too long. It produced a dangerous torque reaction when the plane was turned sharply. Caused a lot of crashes.

There must be a lot of tensile force on the bolts holding those cylinders in place...

How is fuel/spark delivered to the combustion chambers? I can't imagine that the gas tank/electricals all rotate as well...?

Kind of reminds me this bike that was built in the 90's by Buell.. it was called the RR1000... but they nicknamed it "satans hammer" LOL

of course.. the motors are mounted opposites... but you see...? the lines are so similar
