1974 Honda CB360 Garage Find Cafe Build

Funny you guys mention that. I did notice a new copper washer on the oil drain plug. I don't know that I could prove anything at this point since I've had it back a couple days.

I found a motor in St. Louis. $125 bucks, kick is stuck but overall it looks pretty good compared to most I see. Been sitting in a shed and the guy didn't know how many miles were on it.

I was gonna work on getting my motor pulled apart tonight but then I looked around my shop and it was a disaster. I spent the evening cleaning up everything and putting all my toolscinvthe proper place. I hate working in a cluttered mess. It just frustrates me and I figured going at this thing pissed off wouldn't help one bit.

Ttrailer it back to shop and remove sump plug when you get there
No oil - he's 110% liable for 'new' parts or (way more expensive) refurb of original parts

I like this idea... I'd let him pay for the new parts but not so sure I'd let him rebuild this one.

The big problem is getting the guy to do it. He seems like an ass who has literally left you stranded (last Friday). One of those things where it might be better just to move on and forget this guy exists.

I agree. He isn't gonna take any responsibility here. I need to stop fighting with him and start rebuilding.

Round up some buddies and give him a good ass-whoopin'. Nothing teaches a lesson faster than having to pick up your own teeth with broken fingers.

That's a joke, by the way. I only advocate violence toward Kawasaki owners.

HAHAHA...the asshole rides a Kawasaki.

Bring it over to my house. We'll soda blast it in the driveway with my home made blaster idea I stole from the cheap mod thread. Worked ok on my engine...

As far as the engine itself. Hard to tell from the outside. How does the guy know that the engine turns freely if the kicker is stuck?

For $125, not too bad. Driving to St. Louis for it would suck and I'd offer a bill for it. Even if it turns out to be a parts engine, that could work out too.

He took the side cover off and put a wrench to it. How do your neighbors like it when you soda blast out there? My friends dad was kind enough to soda blast my frame at his body shop but that stuff was everywhere! I was thinking it would be hard to do in a neighborhood without pissing off some local natives. If i get it I will gladly bring it over!

My wife was more upset about it than anyone! My garage is on the back of the house so the neighbors don't mind. Plus, the cheap soda blaster isn't as powerful as a real one and won't throw soda everywhere. Won't strip paint but does a decent job with all the grit and grime on the engine case, especially after a simple green scrub.

For $125.00 I would have it, if it wasn't so far from central Florida ;)
It's more than worth it, even if only for parts

I can say this, with that engine number its a pretty EARLY 1974. It DOESN'T have the punch marks for the recalls for the tensioner and the cam shafts and valve cover bolts.

I would guess it has some miles on it with the way the speedo output area is pretty covered in oil and crud.

Now, it it was less than a 2 hour drive from me I would pick it up at that price. Maybe the guy would meet you half way?

Worth a shot, I got my 450 from a guy 2 hrs away for 150 and we met half way in bewtween. If you go the whole way offer less, or full price to meet halfway.

My college room mate lives in St. Louis now so that would be cool and the other option is to meet him at Mid Ohio which he might be going to. I was concerned about the recalls and milage as well but if I can throw it in the bike for little work and get it running while i fix my other motor its worth it.

Get him to pull the valve covers and take pics of the inside so you can see if it has had enough oil.

I would get it, swap out tensioner if necessary although the original design is fine if servicing is carried out at regular intervals
The recall was due to the fact if servicing wasn't carried out and top broke off there was a possibility that engine could lock up.
When the newer design fails it drops down behind instead of in front of tensioner blade
Both the new and old tensioners can break

Mid Ohio Vintage Races and Swap meet is next weekend.

That's great incentive for you and the seller to get together there.

I was really hoping to use my excuse for needing a motor to hit up Mid Ohio but thanks to some decent luck, I located a motor here in town! The guy even dropped it off for me. I was looking for just a motor but in typical moto-collecting fashion, I have acquired another damn motorcycle. Gonna pull the motor outta this guy and get Uncle Deadly running for now. I guess I now have the project all lined up for this winter!
