Thanks guys!
I finally got a name worked out for the bike... maybe. It's a little... cheesy... and crunchy I think.
The Screamin' Cheetoh? maybe? Just somethin we've been tossing around the office, but it kinda pops don't ya think? 8)
Anywho, I'm still working on some little things, and I'll get some more pics as soon as there is something to show.
Also I slapped the stock seat on to start making a taillight mount for it and I got to thinking "That would look nice cut down a good bit." But my original seat is way too nice to go butchering, so I'm now looking for a beat-to-shit-seat. I'll be watching ebay closely for one, but if you know of anyone getting rid of one, I'd appreciate a heads-up. Even just a stock seat pan would do nicely, because I've got plenty of seat foam to make a pad. Thanks in advance for any help.
Also I'm in the market for a cheap pair of rearsets... I mean cheap. When I sat on the bike, I realized that I have moved the bars down too far to be comfortable with the stock peg locations.
I'll need to do some figuring, but the xs650 pan might work. I need to make sure the shape's right first though. If that will work, I'll either buy or fabricate some hinges to mate it up with the stock mount locations. I'll send ya a pm on it.
Re: Alex's 72 CB750... The Screamin' Cheeto... She will roar again soon!
I got some of the wiring sorted out tonight! Key word being some... I got the lights to come on instead of the fuse blowing! but now the starter is staying engaged. This is actually kind of funny because the starter has never worked before. The bike kicks on the first go usually and I happen to think it's pretty badass to kick your bike to life. Anyway, I'm going to work on it more tomorrow, and who knows, maybe I'll have a starter that isn't attatched to me at the hip! The Cheeto will roar again soon! Maybe not tomorrow, but hopefully I'll have it all sorted out this week! I've still got to get the throttle cables shortened and front brake functional. As far as the front brake goes, though, I'll be riding it as I'm fixing it. I rode it for a year with only the rear drum and a few more weeks won't hurt anything... maybe. Here are some shots of the bike that I haven't posted yet so we can keep some pics of the bike on the current page. No current pics, as shots of a bird's nest of wires hanging out of the headlight aren't very stimulating.
More to come soon.
And finally a shot of yours trully checking out the riding position... And yes, my big ass needs some rearsets bad!
When she becomes roadworthy I'll run her down the beach highway and take some shots with a nice camera. Maybe TwistedWheelz will be good enough to drive alongside and take some action shots...
Re: Alex's 72 CB750... The Screamin' Cheeto... She Will Roar Again Soon!
Right now I'm running a set of two-to-one drag pipes with the turnouts cut off. After installing them I realized that the exhaust was entirely too loud. TwistedWheelz welded me up an excellent set of baffles a while back to fix this problem. The baffles quiet it down and provide sufficient back-pressure while keeping the nice throaty growl that the drag pipes give off.
I've got a four to one header that I plan on making an exhaust for, but that will be down the road. I've also still got the factory 4-into-4 exhaust and it's in excellent shape. I don't think they'll ever be on the bike again though... too quiet and I don't know if the look would work with the bike anymore. Plus I think I'll be trading that and the other factory chrome to a friend of mine for a 1980 gl1100 with no papers. Another big arse thread coming soon for that one!
Re: Alex's 72 CB750... The Screamin' Cheeto... She Will Roar Again Soon!
I ask because I'm considering doing straight/
drag pipes as well to help with the clearance of my rearsets. Is there a tutorial for how he made the baffles for you? I might go this route if I decide not to use my mufflers.
Re: Alex's 72 CB750... The Screamin' Cheeto... She Will Roar Again Soon!
No but I'm sure he will when he sees that you asked. It was pretty simple if I recall. They're made of two different sized copper pipe caps stuck together. I ended up having to drill some holes in them as the backpressure was too high, but drilling the holes helped me tune them. I'd drill one or two, run the bike, drill some more and so on until I got the right sound/backpressure.
Re: Alex's 72 CB750... The Screamin' Cheeto... She Will Roar Again Soon!
that dremel in the eye is less than pleasant. and if you wait 2 days cause you think it will work itself out like a splinter. it wont. but it will leave a nice rust ring. which get ground out with a rotary burr.
but on the positive you get to look like marilyn manson for a couple of days...
Re: Alex's 72 CB750... The Screamin' Cheeto... She Will Roar Again Soon!
Yeah, I understand that it is safe shop practice and just a damn good idea. I just get to working and forget to put them on when I grab the power tools. So here comes my public response as to clear my name in the media circles.
PSA: Remeber kids, when working with power tools, you should always wear proper eye protection. After all, you'll shoot your eye out kid!
