"A Bird in the Hand" take 2. DR650 Deadtail Bobber, now with a sidecar

I believe we call this “scope creep”. I love it though.

I decided to go ahead and paint the frame while everything was apart. If something needs fixed or modified, I'll Sand the paint off, fix it and spot paint it again. Used etching primer, sealer primer then duplicolor wheel coating. It's supposed to be tough as nails and they had it in the burnt orange color I wanted. Supposed to be hot for the next few days, so it'll sit in the shop and cure for a bit.

Also, a simple bracket to mount a frame to an engine stand makes all the difference when painting.

Having a little ptsd looking at those plates you added for the hack. I just had to massage a couple of those on the RD for the pipes.

haha I may have to do the same if I end up making an under slung pipe for when I run the sidecar
 
Thanks fellas.

Got the forks shaved of the unused tabs and painted them as well as the triples with the silver appliance epoxy. Got the engine in and assembled back into a roller.

Beautiful (although not a fan of orange, it works!) How is the appliance silver? As good as the black? Will it need clear coat?

Thank you. I've never used the black, but I hear it's tough stuff. I used the silver on the engine case covers and the turned out really nice. For some reason the forks didn't lay down as nice and have a much rougher finish enough so that I may strip them this winter if I'm feeling froggy. You also cannot get the ss color appliance epoxy anywhere at this point. Last year I bought the last two cans I could find at the hardware store the next town over and have not found any since. Even online, everywhere is out of stock.
 
Do you have any close shots of the fork legs and triple? I am interested to see how the appliance epoxy coating turned out. Bike looks very clean.
 
I like the appliance paint. I painted a Honda CL360 frame with the black and left it out in the weather for over a year. It did great with very little fading. It was in every extreme that Georgia weather can throw at it. This included sitting in snow and ice for a week. I used the SS on the 360 wheel hubs and I've used it on several bits that were originally cad plated and I didn't want the time/expense to replate them. Since COVID both the black and stainless have been difficult to find in my area.

Love the orange!
 
Same up here, whole sections of the paint aisle are empty at times. took 5 stores to get a second can of the right blue for the Hawk.

When I needed the SS paint for the Hedgehog I couldn't find it anywhere locally. I ended up ordering a six-can box from Home Depot. It arrived in less than a week. I know that's a bunch of paint, but I did some stuff on that Rupp mini bike, the entire Hedgehog, and still have half a can left.
 
I had trouble finding cans of black high temp spray paint and ended up ordering some from McMaster-Carr. Might have cost me an extra two bucks with shipping, but everything comes from them overnight to my place.
 
Still plugging away. No real pics to upload. I got the bike pretty well assembled and the CDI wired up enough to get spark and a fire outta it. Tying up loose ends and final details. Hopefully the next update will be of me riding it. School starts on august 16th. I'd love to ride it in on the first day...
