art or shit?

The fact that he was able to take a non living thing
a motorcycle
and put it in a situation that gives you the fealing of a animal being abused making you sick to your stomach and so angry that you want to break the legs off the chair your sitting and beat the living daylights out of the guy in the the most painfu and malice way possible "I know I DO !!"

I think it's art ..

Win all was said and done what the worst that has ben dun the paint is scratched , tires shot wheel may be to .... we don't know if the bike wasn't a basket case to begin with ..

must capture the imagination , provoke thought ,involve emotion, educate ,inform and my personal fav make the world a better place..

Now Art is what I do for a living but you call me an artist and I'll loosen your TEETH .... I'm a maker of shit hopefully COOL shit but at the end of the day when every one has gone and all that is left are the pigeons of the park I can telyou this all they see is a toilet ..

But in all of this, can we get a big HELL YEAH that the bike made it through and didn't give up the ship?? Thing frickin held together through it all. That is art!!

Seems like this has turned into a "I know art, you dont" pissing contest. Lots of arrogance and holier than though bullshit floating around...
Like it or leave it, the guy created something that got at everyone who saw it. In my narrow minded, uneducated opinion, its shit. Artistic shit, sure, still shit.
In the end, who gives a fuck? The guy will still get massive amounts of money from grants and private benefactors to do with as he pleases. The great unwashed masses of DTT will still primarily hate it. The oh so intelligent and well groomed among us will still think of themselves as living in some greater state of existance because they "study" the crap people put out there... Fuck it. Go ride a bike.

Your right!!

;) I don't know shit I have ideas and that is about it
"Fuck it. Go ride a bike." and i would If the ice would melt :)

I personally like low-brow art, and think most abstract art is only good hanging in hotel lobbies and the only conceptual art that I enjoy is watching a good bar fight. This video is not art, it is what seems like a good idea when your really, really drunk with your friends and feeling destructive. Can anything be art that can be a bit on Mtv's Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory show?
But then again what do I know, I paint this kind of shit

We all have different ideas as to what is and isn't art. I do believe that its up to the individual to determine what is or isn't art.
Exactly.

I think anyone with training in a specific area is entitled to say they know something about it. I don't go telling chef's that their creations aren't food. So if you wanna degrade what I've studied and devoted my life to great job! People who have opinions on things they know nothing about are like people going to the polls who know nothing about the candidates.

I've seen enough "holier than though" motorcycle arrogance on dtt to fill the frames in any major art gallery. but most of it is because someone knows what they are talking about and "studied", through either education, or practice to attain that knowledge.

So stop internet raging. a view of art that doesn't include this video IS a narrow view of art. but I'm sure you can piss further.

Credentials from ones "Peers" is not validation for ones craft.

Britany Spears is a Grammy Award winning "Artist". That doesn't make her Talented, or her body of work any less of a pile of crap either ;)

And I agree, Art is subjective. But just because somebody calls something Art, doesn't mean I have to like it.

somehow missed this one redbird, this is a very good point, and validation from one's peers doesn't make it good. you just can't say that brittney spears doesn't make music though (well...) very poor music in my opinion. Art is such a broad term and of course when you call something art it doesn't mean you have to like it. Art's more of a category and you definitely don't have to like everything or ANYTHING called art. I get worried when someone has such strong opinions on a piece like this. it's just art. do we really need talk about inflicting bodily damage to this person? I mean I know this is the internet but, if somebody doesn't like my bike (when i finally finish it) I hope they don't want to hurt me.

i definitely thought some of his stuff was good, some i didn't like, and I thought "bull" was one of his better things.

"if somebody doesn't like my bike (when I finally finish it) I hope they don't want to hurt me."

I seriously doubt it. But just in case your sig. "72' CL350 KILLING MACHINE" should be able to spring to your defense.

OCC

britney spears

Hitler

(not comparing OCC, britney spears, or Obama to Hitler)

Oh I seriously doubt violence will be a result EM. From what has been posted here it appears we all have our ideas as to what is art and what isn't. To me art is like anything else in this world. It requires skill. Chaining a bike to a beam and letting it run doesn't require skill. Canaletto, Rodin, and one of my favorites, Andrew Wyeth have the skill to make your brain work without being confrontational or downright stupid. So as per the title of this thread "Art or shit" I stick with shit.

one of the most important pieces of art from the 20th century.

it's not the skill of the artist hand, but the skill of his/her choices.
Duchampe chose this urinal, re-purposed it, and created art.
much like what Dobler (or whatever his name is) did for that Honda.
Drawing ability comes naturally to me. it is very hard to be creative.
for me anyway

Holy Crap! You're an Art Major?!
So, what restaurant do you work at? :p

And I've seen "Chef's" create stuff that I wouldn't call Food. Although others seem to enjoy it.
Food: any nourishing substance that is eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide energy, promote growth, etc.
So if one doesn't ingest it, is it still Food to them?
And I might know a little something about this... I've been eating all my life ;)

it's a urinal that someone wrote their name & 1917 on... i really can't see where this is art, let alone important art... could you explain this one?... i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one who's completely lost on this one.

edit: i guess the person that sculpted the original template for the urinal itself is an artist... it is a very attractive urinal... nice curves, nice flow... i'd pee in it.

No I'm one of those art majors who outwardly avoids an association to the art community
i.e. i don't have ironic facial hair, don't work in the food service industry, and maintain a "normal" hair style.
i also try to avoid flowing garments and beaded jewelry.

well, in 1917 this was part of show in New York city were it was actually sectioned off for viewing by adults only because it was considered lewd.
R. Mutt was the masculine identity of Marcel Duchampe. he would often sign his work with this name on work he felt was more, well... masculine.
It basically revolutionized the art world "ready made" sculpture.
I'm sure you've seen Picasso's "Bull" with the bike seat and handle bars that look like a bull
He brought attention to an object that maybe wouldn't have ever been looked at as such.
we can now look at it in a new context and see line, shape, form, elements we think about in sculpture.
we have to remember, someone "designed" this urinal they perhaps took these things into consideration
Duchampe showed us beauty in the ordinary and the mundane.

This, and Piccasso's "Guernica" are considered to be the two most important pieces of art work from the 20th century
it had a lot to do with innovation. especially on the part of Duchampe.
