calling all BMW guys. /// and gals

yeah when i placed the rear wheel i used my torque wrench and set the bolts all to spec. It all looked kosher. There was a random bushing type thing that i found later on by the bike though. I have a few projects so not sure if it is from this or not I really don't think so i looked at the micro fiche on bike bandit and don't see it anywhere. it is like a 2in v shaped bushing the axle rod wouldn't slide through it so i don't think it belongs to the bmw i really have no idea what it is. I will get some pics when i get home tonight. See if you guys know.

Ha! Welcome to the land of BMW. Was tempted today by a 1984 R80ST for $1500. Monoshock frame which makes for a nice cafe conversion, but too many bikes in the stable already.

Yeah i have seen a few /6 turned into cafe bikes but to be honest after riding one i don't really get it. They aren't nimble, they aren't light, they aren't fast. at least this one isn't. But it's that highway feel that sets it apart. I mean i have always hated riding motorcycles on the freeway and this bike at 70 feels so good it really is incredible for a bike it's size.

in any case it's the best 1200 bux i've ever spent. Cant believe how well it runs with so little effort after sitting so long. Really took a chance at this one seeing it not running but it would appear it's very mechanically sound i have rode it at least 200 miles and it only runs better than the first mile. I think i should change the oil again soon though to get all the oldness out of the motor. the oil already looks a bit dark from the rejuvenation.

read an internet article about a guy riding an r60/6 500,000 miles. wow i think i have a new life goal. To see the country on my motorcycle.

See the little notch on the air filter cover bottom front? That's for a cross-over fuel tube. You put T fittings on both fuel lines and a tube between running through that notch. If one petcock fails, both carbs can run off one side.

Wow, lookin' good! I'd want to ride that every day as well. I am a big fan of black bikes, but I am totally diggin' the white :)

So let's make the first trip with it to the AMA hall of fame in Pickerington- maybe some time in September or even October- nice time of year for a good long ride.

Sounds good to me Matt. I do really want to go while i still have good riding weather. There is a ride some guys in PA are talking about doing as well that i think sounds fun. Through the PA "grand canyon" idk what that is but sounds like good times we should ride down for that too. I Have off sunday 9/10 if you want to go then

I may actually be able to swing 9/10- I'll let you know next week. Keep me posted on the PA ride, sounds interesting and I'd love to put some real miles on the 850 before the season ends.

Matt

I'm enjoying this resurection. It appears to be an enjoyable bike to ride at a comfortable lesurley pace unlike my frenetic, high revving my Honda 650/4. Do you have any plans for modifying/upgrading?

Gotta get one of these boxer twins.

Not to keep this off topic, but doesn't look good for the 10th. My assistants going out on medical starting Friday. Will get a good weekend soon.

Matt

Great find, you will really enjoy it on a trip. The good lady wife and I travelled 6,000 miles around Europe in 1978 on our 60/5 and it never missed a beat, felt comfortable like an old armchair.
Like the Velo I had it stored away for many years and dragged it out in 2005, put on some new tyres and a battery and it was just like old times, clunky gearbox and all:)

no gjim it is def master of cruising and that is about it. I really love riding it though. Aside from my intermittent carb leakages/dryin up it has been nothing but great riding. I believe the carb issue to be some problem with sticky float needle. perhaps some teeny brass particles from when i had to drill out the idle jet. In any case. I have ordered a new front tire as i just couldn't deal with the rubbing from PO choice of large front tire and There is some dry rot. I also ordered some low euro bars from flanders to tidy up that space and improve ergos. Only problem is i hardly want to ride my honda now!. Just a different class of motorcycle altogether. Changed the oil in the gear box and drive shaft gear box oil had some metal particles in it. Has a magnetic drain plug which collected em though. A little concerning but from what i have read this is normaL? seems odd. It just says to use hypoid gear oil so i got some bel ray 80w90 "hypoid gear oil" hope that is what it calls for as it wasn't cheap. Need to get up to the bmw dealer and get some petcock gaskets. I want to get some side covers but have struck out recently. They sell them oem for like 110 for the pair may just have to bite the bullet and buy em. There is an ebay repro for like 80 but they say they are for the /5 are the covers different for /6? they look identical. I'll post some more pics when i get the bars and new rubber on.

Oh and did a valve adjustment right intake was indeed loose. tightened her up sounds great now and smoothed the ride even more.

Glad you are enjoying it- knew you would ;)

I have seen them for nearly that much a piece. I still have the like new set off my R80R that I plan to list this winter. Don't think they'd fit your bike. Also have the stock cans . . .

$110 for a pair of new of OEM side covers for any bike is a reasonable price. I paid $100 for a NOS Sunrise Orange metal flake CB550F sidecover from Western Hills Honda when I was restoring my old bike.
