how did you go about mounting that to the pipes? looks really sick!

Thank you everyone. As I'm about to reveal I really just made it so I could hide my ugly-ass welds :p. They may not look like much but I guarantee you they're sealed and strong. I first decided where my mounting points would roughly be. I made the mounting tabs on the back side of the guard, drilled them out to the size of the mount bolt, then drilled the front face hole large enough to fit the socket wrench. Once the guard and mounting tabs on the backside were finished I laid this back onto the pipes and made a mark through the hole where the bolts would go. I hack-sawed off the bolt ends to a length that wouldn't extend past the face of the guard, then welded them to the marks I made. I did some light widening of the mounting tab holes to get them to all fit in the end. Once its mounted and tightened down its solid as a rock. The whole exhaust and guard still needs a bunch of slag cleanup coming soon.

awesome! thanks for that. man, i wish we weren't 3000 miles away from each other...our bikes would look like a couple of illegitimate twins cruisin' down the road next to each other 8)

Brilliant work!

I love the seemingly random hole size and location, and the clever way you have mounted it to the pipes.

A professional job.

I'm usually a black on black on black kind of a guy, but I also agree... you did such a great job with the brushed look, I'd think you'd want to show that off!

If doing clear over, would it get hot enough to yellow over time like I've seen some exhaust do?

End of day it's your bike and vision, so don't let us sway you, even if I agree with the fellas above...ha

I'm with maduncle on this - brushed finish and clear is the way to go!

Everybody
paints everything black.

Crazy

Truth, but there's a revival of everybody "clearing" over everything too! haha I'd agree and clear it though, the look is great. Even if you are painting the pipes, it would STILL look great brushed/cleared like that.

Use engine enamel in a colour other than black ;)
Yamaha used red on some TY models but there are a lot more colours available today (I think a 'splash' of colour could set things off pretty good, time to 'photoshop' some colour ;D )

Instead of clear coat, I swear by Rustoleum Rust Inhibitor. I'm not sure how it stands up to heat but that's what my tank is sprayed with and it hasn't rusted a bit. I'm sure it'll need a fresh application once in a while but that's fine with me. A little of that stuff goes a long way.

I started playing around in photoshop last night. I'm not sure if I want to go as bold as RED (that could be cool though), but I do want to break up how metallic everything looks. Black was my first choice, then I stated messing around with some tank paint designs. I'd love to do a color/bare metal combo. I'm trying to think of ways to make it look less Mad Max, more fun.

It might be cool to have some sort of anodized look to it maybe? A clear with a slight hue of the color you are looking to use? I'll shut up now. :-X

Chevy orange engine enamel ;)
(plus an orange offset stripe down tank with black pinstripes 8) )

Hahaha. These are all great suggestions but, I think I've decided on something even better... ;D

Here I go...back to black. Just looks so good! Especially if it was a matte or satin... Nice work!
