CX500 "Bastardwing" - 24th June - It caught fire!!

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 3rd september -Yes I've been quiet but there's a new bike.

Congrats Staffy! That is a gorgeous bike!

About the shifter - what about just removing the rubber on it for now and maybe filing off the sharp edges? Would give you a little bit of room to move your foot around at least. Don't know if it would be enough though...

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 3rd september -Yes I've been quiet but there's a new bike.

Re-bend the shift lever or make a new one. I've made a few to match my rearsets controls on my CX500. I use a self-made two into one exhaust so I didn't need to jump the shark (stock exhaust pipe) so to say. Buy an extra Honda shift lever and (they're all mostly the same spline) cut off the splined boss. Then fashion an arc to clear the pipe and weld the toe piece on from the donor shift lever. Easy as falling down whilst drinking.
Cheers, 50gary

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 3rd september -Yes I've been quiet but there's a new bike.

The problem is the shift lever sits a little high so changing up or down causes my foot to come up to an awkward angle and I've been missing gears as a result. Moving the shifter down a spline means it is perfect but the shifter hits the exhaust meaning it won't go into gear properly when shifting down. The bike was dropped at some point so I guess the lever meay have been bent slightly, plus the footpeg seems a bit droopy. It may be a combination of both issues. Either way we're talking about bending the shift lever a few degrees at the most.
And rocket is a leafy vege sorta like a peppery mini lettuce parsley kinda thing. Jamie Oliver uses it all the time. Tastes like awesome.

i hate you! well, not really. but man i wish we would have gotten the euros over here in the states. i love those bikes. you got a nice one. congrats on that. i can see why you put the other bike on hold. i'd do the same thing. do you plan to pretty much keep it stock or are you going to do anything with it after you get those issues sorted out?

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 3rd september -Yes I've been quiet but there's a new bike.

She's my daily rider so there's no plans to do much other than ride at the moment. If a restoration does come up on the cards it would be further down the track after I finish university. That said, a few things will be done along the way such as respraying the swingarm next time the bearings need greasing and trying to find the neatest 650 front end I can to replace the 500 one that's on there.
She rides real nice though ;D

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 3rd september -Yes I've been quiet but there's a new bike.

It's fitting that my Minister of Vegetation should be astride a green mount!
That looks really clean mate, nice grab indeed. Say if you're swapping the front end, why not swap to a real upgrade? I'd imaging buying CX650 specific parts could be spendy vs. some nifty take off from Ebay. Heck, even an cb750f2 fork set would be a biog step up and they're everywhere. Just a thought....spiff looking ride though!

Minister of vegetation! As if you remember that!
It is true that an upgrade might be an Idea and a 650 Euro front end might be spendy, but I'm waiting back on hearing about some bits on the east coast that should be fairly reasonably priced and in good nick. I'm not overly keen to do much with Esme as I've already bitten off a mouthful with the Bastardwing. Plus, sometimes there's a lot to be said for originality on a bike like this.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 27th october - changed my mind about the gauges.

I've changed my mind on something, but what fun would a 2+ year old project be without changing your mind?
I'm not gonna mess around with all the stock speedos and all that. Instead I'm gonna fit one of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/220873218547?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
Simple but effective I reckon and it'll save a lot of messing about with speedo cables, reduce the already substantial weight over the front wheels, plus it'll allow some room for a GPS ;)
Well it is getting set up as a tourer right? While on that subject, I've been offered some period Shoei panniers with frames already suited to the CX that I'm yet to go round and see. I know he's not in a hurry to sell though so that's ok.
It's been a little slow as
1) I'm finishing up my first year at university (all distinctions and high distinctions so far so not bad for a "mature" aged student) and
2) Esme, the CX650E spat her shit and the timing advance went up the creek making her unrideable. That means the engine drop and timing chain/mechanical seal repair has been bumped forward messing up the funds a bit. Luckily some 650 forks and brace have turned up too so she'll be like a pig in crap pretty soon and twice as pretty. I'm really considering a paint change on her though, but first things first. I think I may just finish up the paint on the 500 myself too as everyone seems to get quite a good finish with rattle bombs so I think it's worth persisting.
Any suggestions for a bodgineered carport spray booth anyone?

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 27th october - changed my mind about the gauges.

I've heard quite a few people say those Dan Moto gauges are crap - and that you're better off to spend the few extra $$ and get an Acewell (can't say I've used a Dan Moto gauge, but I've wired up a few Acewells in my time and they are worth the money IMO).

Plus, I think the round style of the Acewell will fit in better if you get the old school panniers (they sound tasty ;) )

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 27th october - changed my mind about the gauges.

I was thinking they might be but I've got a mate who's a wizard with anything electronic who bought one of these for himself and pulled it apart. He said they were not too bad, modded it a bit and has been running it fine since. Mind you, I would much prefer the acewell ;)

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 27th october - changed my mind about the gauges.

Have you seen this one? Looks like a knock off of the Koso guage?

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 27th october - changed my mind about the gauges.

I've seen the one 50gary is talking about in use and head nothing but good.
$%28KGrHqJ,%21h%21E3uYSOFrIBONEwFwOHQ%7E%7E0_35.JPG

However, I know from personal experience that the Vapor speedo is really good and quite reliable: http://trailtech.net/vapor.html
I can get them for around $110 maybe a bit less and I'd gladly send one to you if you can't get'm in Oz.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 27th october - changed my mind about the gauges.

That's the one my mate bought and modded 50gary. I'm mainly leaning to the dan moto stuff because of price. Despite our dollar going through the roof and us being able to get bucket loads of cheap stuff online at the moment, some things are still over priced. Gauges are one.
Swag, that link is for the dashboard, not the gauge. You're right though, we can get em here but just not at the price you're saying. I think the mark up here in Aus is still a joke.
I'd otherwise be keen on these two acewells:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Acewell-3701-Digital-Speedometer-tachometer-odo-trip-/300507930611?pt=AU_Motorcycle_Parts_Accessories&hash=item45f7ab1ff3

The second one has a fuel gauge though which is a little redundant as the bike doesn't have a sender and I'm not going to fit one. With both of these I'd need to fot a seperate temp gauge though.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 27th october - changed my mind about the gauges.

I bet you could use the fuel indicator as a temp meter with very little effort...

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 27th october - changed my mind about the gauges.

I was thinking the same but the acewell is 100ohms and the sender on the bike is 7ohms. That'd take some bodgineering that's a little past my expertise (or understanding). Still, it could be done.

Just add a resistor in line.

Did it on my ZX9 - works fine ;)

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 27th october - changed my mind about the gauges.

How much can you guys get those two Acewells for? The price isn't too bad here but I'm betting you guys would get much sweeter deals over there.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

The 650 has been taking up too much time and way too much money. I just had a chat with my mate who's doing a bit of work on it for me, including trying to figure out why the bike was hitting a rev wall at 4000 rpm. It turns out the filter was blocked up with oil which means it's highly likely that that it's blowing by the oil rings and pressurising the crankcase. This means a costly rebuild and SWMBO and myself aren't prepared to wear it any more. So my mate's gonna keep looking into it but it's likely we'll sell the bitch. The good news is that'll put the Bastardwing back on the priority list and after the 650 sells, hopefully a little cashish to throw at it too.
