Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

I hate to hear the bad news, but I'll be glad to see the bastardwing gettin the love again!

Fuck it Stafford my boy, you can't fight destiny. The wing was just meant to get all the love.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

Turns out the oil I might be using might have been the issue. It'll be word up if I find ou tthat's the case but the thinking is that the synthetic oils are the issue and I need to run a heavier mineral oil. The compression is excellent so it is a good theory.

let me know how much you want for the 6 fiddy if you decide to sell dude..I seam to buy all your other stuff so meh ya never know ;)

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

Sounds like a glimmer of hope there Staffy, hope it works out for you. Is the synthetic you used the recomended viscosity?

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

Yeah it's an oil all us CX'ers use, but after this a few folks'll be reconsidering stepping away from that for a full mineral oil instead. We were using HPR Gas 10W-50 which is a synthetic blend.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

Has a compression test been done? Wonder if the Pressures are all equal...

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

Yeah that was done ages ago. A fella who's been around these bikes for years though has said that he's often had good compression on these bikes but had a rooted oil sealing ring. Apparently the 650's have this a lot more than the 500's. As a side note, the fella who's mentioned all this has a pretty good site with his CX's on them. These are some rat bikes he's got. In particular, check out the CX-Periment.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

Yeah, that makes sence. The oil control ring could be wiped and the compression rings be in good enough shape to seal...

Thanks for the linky... that CX-periment is like a recliner!

Ah Penrite :)

I've got this in all the bol d'ors Staffy, and it suits that application really well. Hope it's something simple like that.

A very popular oil in the CX bikes is Shell Rotella T 15/40. I use it in my CX500 and have for a long time, I have no issues with it. Check over on the CX/GL forum. I also recommend the spin-on oil filter adapter from Randdak.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

Is that a straight mineral oil Gary?

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

Yes it is, mineral oil. I've used it for many years. The complaint I hear with synthetics is about the clutch slipping. The Shell Rotella T is also inexpensive so I don't mind changing more often. Rotella is actually for heavy diesel trucks high pressure.

I use the rotella in my 750. All around good oil for these old bikes

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

I went into this and found on the CX and GL sites quite a lot of the guys were on Motul 5000, so thats the way I went.

The other thing to remember is my CX is thirty years old and needs lead replacment additive in with the petrol.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

We've been runnign the CX's without lead replacement over here. There's quite a few old boys who'll vouch for the fact the valve seats are hard enough and noone seems to be having any troubles on tear down. We've had lead free fuel here in Aus for around ten or so years now too.

For now we're gonna use plain old Repco mineral oil as it's a straightforward oil and will do the trick nicely. Quite inexpensive too. I've heard of Motul before but I can't say I've ever seen Shell Rotella around. It's proabably the same as something else over here but with and indigenized name.
