CX500 "Bastardwing" - 24th June - It caught fire!!

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 12 November, the new bike can kiss my ass.

yea, in an '80 you should be safe. We mandated un-leaded here in '73 and the automitve industry was gearing up for it as early as 1970... my ol '73 CB350F's owners manual specified unleaded fuel.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 16 Dec - Finally got side covers and happy anniversary!

It's a little late but it's actually just past two years since I started on this build. The 12th December was when I brought that first bike home.

What an interesting two years this project has seen too....

I've been chasing a set of CX custom side covers for the Bastardwing for some time and Hichhkrjo hooked me up with a pair. They are perfect.

I even like the colour to the point I'm thinking of hitting the rest of the tins in satin black for a while and deal with the paint later in the year..... maybe

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 16 Dec - Finally got side covers and happy anniversary!

Gonna be painting this thing over the next few weeks with rollers à la the technique mentioned in the $50 mod thread. Watch this space.....

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 16 Dec - Finally got side covers and happy anniversary!

Ok. I'm really sold on this roller painting stuff. The thread I've been reading is archived twice and spans over 200 pages over 5 years! I guess that goes to show what a great way of doing things it is.

Here's the thread: http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=2331682&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1

The trouble I'm having is that I want to do the paint white striping on black, such as the early BMW were

R51-600.jpg

But I really wanna tie some red in there. I really dig the old school hot rod style of things and I guess in a way I wanted to carry that into it, but without the freehand striping.

Kinda like this

So I'm open for ideas, even photoshops. There's an image up above here to refer to, how would you tie the red and white stripes into the paint.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 19 Dec - Will be painting soon and looking for input.

Funny you should mention that as I was thinking myself that today and I really do think something like that might be a winner. What would you do with the wheels in that case? I'm a bit lost for ideas on that one. I do know I don't want to do them solid red however, in fact I'd like to keep the base colour black.

I actually got some time to do a few things on the 500 today.

I continued work on the contour which will cover over the old tank badge mounts. A layer of filler is now down and sanded and I hope to do a second run tomorrow.

I also got the tail light apart and got into cleaning up the plastic chrome. It's part way there with most of the exposed sections fairly well polished, but I still need to clean up all the other little bits ready for paint. It'll all be black except for the chrome that goes around the taillight and the bit inside that needs to be chrome. That way it'll look a lot neater and age a little better too.

Not a lot but it's more than I've done in some time.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 19 Dec - Will be painting soon and looking for input.

I'm prett sold on those scallops.

The only thing I'm umming and ahhing about is wether the scallops should come down onto the tank or if the tank should stay black. That then leads to the question of what to do with the tank other than plain black if the scallops are going to be on the fairing only....

These are definitely first world problems.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 19 Dec - Will be painting soon and looking for input.

I'd trim the tank to. Just adds that little extra bit of keen detail.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 19 Dec - Will be painting soon and looking for input.

For that to happen, most of the fairing would need to be white. I need to get out there with a paint marker and sus this out.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 19 Dec - Will be painting soon and looking for input.

I've been digging around to try and figure out what the Australian equivalent of Tremclad or Rustoleum is, as mentioned in a lot of discussion about the $50 paint job because those two products basically aren't available here in Australia. I cam across the following bit of information here which says that our Killrust and White Knight epoxy enamel paints are the same as the oil based Rustoleum and Tremclad. Zinsser "Peel Stop" and what is alkyd paint? [Archive] - Renovate Forums

As always I took that with a grain of salt so I managed to track down a MSDS for Wattyl Killrust and indeed it is an alkyd enamel the same as Rustoleum and Tremclad. http://www.wattyl.com.au/library/MSDS/D4.59%20Killrust%20Epoxy%20Gloss%20Enamel%206102-22%20Jan%2007.pdf . This one for White Knight Rust Guard shows it has a similar level of Alkyd but actually contains turps already in the paint Yes!MSDS MSDS Database of Chemicals from around the World: Suppliers of Additives & Reagents, Agrochemicals, Basic Chemicals, Biochemicals, Flavors, Intermediates, Bulk Pharmaceuticals, Polymers

The other products I've come across as being used for this purpose are Tremco Metal Armour and Brightside paints.

So it seems for me, the best choice is to stick with the Killrust as my frame and numerous other bits have been painted with the same from rattle bombs. If need be, I can touch up the whole bike with the same brand of paint.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 25 Dec - Sussing out what paint's gonna work.

I don't think you need to continue the same pattern onto the tank. I'd keep the scallops on the fairing as a stand alone design, and just trim the tank out to match. Something simple, just to add detail.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 25 Dec - Sussing out what paint's gonna work.

The catch with that is then what do you do with the tank so it doesn't distract too much from the fairing. Not sure about this after all. Maybe a cafe stripe down the middle of the whole bike might work? Then I can still pinstripe some select areas to break it up a bit.... Come to think of it, I could do a base black and hit it with some white onto cafe stripes using that same lace trick from beat the clock.... hmmmmm.....

ooh, ooh, oooh...

Really excited as I've found some clear lenses for the fairing. Win!

Got the first coat of paint on! Who says you can't paint a bike with a roller? This rocks!
