DEET MB5 - Fully Legal

Re: DEET MB5 - Movin' On Up

A friend of a friend was selling it fairly cheap. No way I could afford a new one so had to jump on this one. Needed a lot of cleaning up and a new bottle jack, but was a nice little project.

Re: DEET MB5 - Movin' On Up

Beauty! Nice score on the stand. Haven't done dick on my 5 as I had a heart attach a week ago. Bummed out right now with no riding or driving.

Re: DEET MB5 - Movin' On Up

Oh my doublej, so sorry to hear this, just had a cold shiver go right over me when I read that. How are you feeling? Lots of time for the bike later on, just take it easy and get better.

Re: DEET MB5 - Movin' On Up

One complete block and three others partial, no history.... out of the blue and I am a active person! Stent put in the one and seeing what meds can do to others for time being. Feel great but no wrenching, riding or driving for a month they say. This getting driven around sure sucks.

Re: DEET MB5 - Movin' On Up

Used the bike lift for the first time last night. Was working on some of the wiring and can't believe how nice it is to work with the bike at raised up like this. Much easier on the back and knees, especially with a bike this low. I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to like the lift but have to say I'm very happy with it.

Re: DEET MB5 - Stand Up Tall

After getting the front tire on, I found out that the center stand wasn't tall enough. The tires I put on are slightly larger than stock and combine that with the worn away stand I had to deal with, the stand was pretty much useless as it was. So I had to remove it again and weld on another strip of metal to the feet. Worked out great, its at a good height now. While I had it off, I also added a rubber grommet to the hole that is supposed to hold a rubber stop to prevent the stand from banging off the frame when up. These stops are NLA so the grommet was used and seems to have done the trick.

Re: DEET MB5 - Wire You Doing This To Me?

I've also been picking at the wiring. I have it all straightened away in the rear, but now struggling with the front. I absolutely hate dealing with wiring, find it mind boggling and frustrating, so I'm just picking at it a bit at a time, should be done in a month or two :)

+1 Just finished with my wiring. I hate wiring and electrical, its black magic. And that's coming from an electrical engineer... ::)

Re: DEET MB5 - A Bolt On Affair

Wasn't feeling the best yesterday but did get an hour to bolt on a few things.

I ordered a black horn but when it came in it was just plain metal. Didn't want to wait for another to come in so painted it myself.

Re: DEET MB5 - A Bolt On Affair

Almost there I see. Was at the 5 the other day and have been playing with the front wire mess and also installed the brake caliper. My question is how much drag do you have on the disc.

Re: DEET MB5 - A Bolt On Affair

I'm not really sure doublej, I never even checked after I put the caliper on. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary though when rolling the bike up on the lift. However, I don't have any fluid in it yet. I can't really check when its up on the lift but will take a look when I get a chance.

I'm almost complete with the wiring. Just have the front turn signals and to add connectors to the rear lights. Hooked up the battery last night and I at least have a working horn :)

Re: DEET MB5 - A Bolt On Affair

Nice work Deacon. Should be a fun little bike when you finish her up.

Re: DEET MB5 - Paint Delete

Had a good day in the garage, stripped the tank and got it ready for a bit of body work. Considering the shape the rest of the bike was in, the tank is in awesome shape. There are a few small shallow dings but nothing major. Hope to get the body work done in a day or two and get it primed. Will be doing a bit on the tail at the same time.

First pic is of the moved ignition switch, first time I saw it with the tank on. Bit hard to see in the pic, but I guess that's the whole idea :)

Tank pre-stripping. Black and gold was just me testing out some concepts A while ago. Tank had two types of red on it; factory paint and another shade over it that one of the PO's must have done.

Re: DEET MB5 - Paint Delete

Just some generic spray stripper, worked fairly well. Took a couple of rounds to get it all off, then I wire wheeled it a bit to get any stray bits off.

Re: DEET MB5 - Tight Light

Been busy the last couple of days getting everything ready for paint. Bodywork and primer done on the tank and seat. Haven't started on the oil tank cover as I need to practice my welding first before attempting to fix the hole in it. It may be a while before I start laying the actual colour though, since I was testing the colour scheme on a small piece today and the paint just clouds over, way to humid. Will still allow me to test some things but will have to wait until it dries out a bit before doing the colour.

Prior to applying the primer I fixed up the tail light holes to make them perfectly round and a tight fit for the lens. Mounted the seat on the bench so the rear was horizontal and then mixed up a slightly runny concoction of body filler and fiberglass resin. Filled the little gap perfectly.

Also, removed extra material from the license plate bracket to make it more smooth looking.
