DEET MB5 - Fully Legal

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

I used a propane torch on the carb manifold and it seemed to work good. Will probably use that if the grill doesn't pan out. At least for around the bolt holes and where the rubber goes, just to reduce the damage.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

Need to pull my caliper apart to over haul also. where are you getting parts from? Also how is the reservoir, does it need a going over. That light bucket doesn't look stock with that large port hole!

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

I just ordered all the caliper parts from my local Honda dealer this morning. All the parts I wanted (all the rubber parts) are surprisingly still available. My bike never came with a master cylinder or lever so I bought a new one off eBay a while ago. I hooked it up to help push the piston out and it works fine.

Yeah, my bike never had a headlight when I bought it (never came with much apparently) so I'm borrowing the headlight from my CB350. I picked up a headlight from a XS400 to use on the 350.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

I ordered one seal #15 (the inner one, #6, is still perfect) and the three rubber boots. Also the rubber cap that goes on the bleeder. I never even asked the cost as its usually around what is online on sites like http://www.dgy.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=2141955&category=Motorcycles&make=HONDA&year=1982&fveh=124997

Its not always exactly the same price but some are cheaper, some a bit more expensive.

Here's the parts I ordered.
45209-166-006 Seal, Piston
45133-166-016 Boot, Pin (please order two of these)
45132-166-016 Boot, Pin Bush (Nissin)
43353-548-003 Cap, Bleeder Screw

Plus I had to order a horn as, you guessed it, my bike never came with one :)

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

Thanks, looks like what I need also. Pads are still good, just need roughed up.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

My pads were toast but I bought new ones over the winter. Luckily the shims were still there and intact since I don't believe they are available any more.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

Ordered from local Honda dealer what you listed plus the dust seal (45109-166-006) and it came to $23.78 + HST. Little parts but not bad cost wise.. All in stock at Honda Canada warehouse.

Re: DEET MB5 - Headlight Complete

Headlight is pretty much finished. Just need to get a replacement bulb for the indicator light that sits on top. Hoping to pick up the gold paint soon to so I can get the ears done and the hole thing mounted.

This is how it looked prior to wet-sanding and polishing the trim ring.

Re: DEET MB5 - Headlight Complete

Had a good weekend getting started on the wiring harness and a few other odds and ends. The harness that came with the bike was pretty much a mess and write-off. The bike was pretty stripped down and the harness was 'modified' to suit it :) Luckily fellow MB5 owner Ari saved me by sending me another harness he had. I hate dealing with the wiring on a bike, so this really saved me as I would have had to wire it from scratch and would have taken me forever. There were still some repairs necessary on this harness (just some bullet connectors to be put on) but it was so nice having such a complete harness to start off with. I have the wiring mostly done now, just waiting to install the handlebar switches and headlight so I can finish connecting everything and tuck it all away.

I removed the airbox and battery holder from under the seat to I have to find a location to hold the battery. Turns out the tool tray under the oil tank cover was a perfect fit. Reused the battery strap to hold it down and it should work out fine.

Also, finished painting the headlight ears and installed them and the headlight shell.

Re: DEET MB5 - Switch It Up

Finished cleaning up the switches tonight. They weren't in too bad of shape compared to the rest of the bike, but were a bit faded so I decided to paint them. Since the lettering on them wasn't recessed I couldn't redo them after applying the black like I'm used to. I like the blacked out look anyway and I don't need to see the switch names. I did however introduce a bit of colour to them to help tie in with the rest of the bike. I painted the kill switch gold and changed a thin white line on the indicator switch from white to gold. Helps to break up the black a bit.

Re: DEET MB5 - Switch It Up

Just got an email from the dealer to let me know my front tire has arrived...yippee! Will soon have a roller.

Re: DEET MB5 - Give Me A Brake

Finally got my front tire this past week. Its been back-ordered for at least six months, but my local Honda dealer kept on top of it and its a great feeling to finally have a roller. Got it mounted up and then finished up the front brake caliper. Rubber bits were a pure pain in the ass to get installed on the caliper. Still not perfect but they are what they are, I'm finished with them. If this caliper gives me trouble I'll source another type and fab up a bracket or something, never want to touch this one again. Finished mounting it tonight and since my handlebars are much lower than stock I'm either going to have to be extremely creative with the hose routing or get a shorter hose.

Re: DEET MB5 - Give Me A Brake

As with a lot of other things on this bike, it never came with an ignition switch, it was cut out in favour of a toggle switch :) Most likely due to a lost key.

So I picked up an after market one but had to find somewhere to mount it. I didn't want it up near the speedo, not really enough room, so I decided to put it under the seat. Fabbed up a bracket out of some left over stainless from an old barbeque and gave it a coat of black. Ironically right after I had it completed and mounted I disassembled an old barbeque to get it ready to take down to the dump and noticed there was a bracket on it to hold the propane hose and it was that perfect size of the ignition switch I had. If only I had of found it earlier I could have just used it.

Just have to do a little wiring and I'll get the switch installed.

Here's the bracket from the barbeque.

Re: DEET MB5 - Give Me A Brake

Thanks guys. Its on a bit of a hold at the moment, just trying to get the bike lift I bought last week cleaned up and painted. Garage is not really big enough to have two big projects on the go at the same time. Hoping to be back at it in a week or two.

Re: DEET MB5 - Movin' On Up

Finished the bike table today, nice feeling to have that out of the way. Bit of fun cleaning it up though. Now I can get back at the MB5. Couldn't resist putting the bike up to test it out, but then realized the hooks on my tie-downs are too large for the holes in the table. Will have to pick up some new ones. Some other good news is that I finally found my clutch lever that's been hiding from me for the past few weeks.

Re: DEET MB5 - Movin' On Up

Wow! That's super nice. Great work man.

Where'd you snag a piece like that? I'm using an old coffee table with wheels, I need to get one of those!
