DEET MB5 - Fully Legal

Re: DEET MB5 - Engine In

Thats getting it done, nice. Put your rear brake stay on before you put the pegs and brake lever then the wheel cover etc. and cotter pin them because they are a bitch after. Any word on your front tire yet

Re: DEET MB5 - Engine In

Last I heard is it won't be in until early August. It would be nice to have it now so I could actually roll it around, but I have plenty to do in the meantime. I probably won't be finished until then anyway. Have a lot left to do.

Re: DEET MB5 - Back Burner

Thanks Justin.

Well I have to put this project on the back burner for a few weeks. Just got my first paying job involving a bike. :) I have to get an '84 Honda Magna V30 up and running and then tuned up. Hasn't ran in at least three years, but doesn't look too bad. Should be fun.

Re: DEET MB5 - Front Burner

Thanks man!

Just finished working on the Magna this afternoon. Owner is going to pick it the next day or two. Felt very different working on someone elses bike, but was fun. However, I can't wait to get back at the MB5. Started cleaning up the headlight bucket this evening. Would like to get most things completed before the front tire arrives.

Also, just waiting on the Honda decal I ordered before i can pick up the gold paint. Would like to have the decal on hand to help with matching up the colour. Have some body work to do before I'm ready to paint anyway.

Re: DEET MB5 - Decal

Received the decals in the mail today. I ordered two different sizes (5" and 6") as I wasn't exactly sure how large I wanted it. Also, I ordered them from two different sellers and the gold is slightly different on both. Not sure which one I like the best, may come down to which one I can best match up with paint.

Also, totally disassembled the brake caliper last night. Some of the rubber is torn so I'll be getting new bits. Also the slider was totally frozen but have it freed now. Will be prepping it for paint tonight.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

Got a bit of painting done tonight. Finished the bodywork on the headlight bucket and sprayed the primer. Also, painted the caliper.

Coming along nicely.
What paint are you using on your caliper? Same as motor, Duplicolor engine enamel?

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

Thanks guys.

I'm using VHT caliper paint. First time using it and it seems ok. I have no way of heat curing it though before installation. I was a bit worried about the shade of gold, but its exactly what I was looking for.

You could carefully use a gas grill...just don't leave the parts in there too long...and don't try to catch them when you drop them :-\

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

Yeah, I've considered that, I have an old BBQ but its not currently working. May try to get it going though and keep it just for baking parts :) Thanks for the idea.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

You can often get generic Venturi assemblies (where the flames come out of) for less than $20 at your local hardware store...that's what always ends up going bad on my grills.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

I'll keep it in mind. I'm off work next week so I'll investigate the grill then to see if its workable. Would be nice if it is as its a decent size and I'd be able to fit engine bits in there for when I do my 350.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

It helps if you are impatient like me and can't wait for paint to dry, as the baked on stuff doesn't instantly chip and scratch when you bump it against something 30 minutes after painting it.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

Grills work great for that type off application, just make sure you clean most of the grease out of them, either by hand or by burning it for a bit till it stops smoking. Don't want all the pretty paint ruined by a nice coat of grease and oil, or the smoke. ;)

Spiders make nests in things as well, like the burners and the pipe they connect too, sometimes just blowing that crap out will make them work again.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

I have used both a propane torch and a "Heat gun" to cure paint and it has worked out well, quick and i already had them both around the shop.

Re: DEET MB5 - Painting Bits

Oooh, I didn't think of using a heat gun - thanks, I'll have to remember that one! The heat gun already gets a lot of use warming up carb rubber bits in the winter...
