DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW ENGINE COLORS AND PHOTOS!

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

Bit late to the build, but loving the timber work.

I like the idea of custom timber work and bikes coming together.

Real talent !!

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

Thank you all for the compliments, I hope that you all know how much they truly mean to me.

Brother meerkatt everything is cool and I appreciate the compliment on the work, I will explain a little in hopes that you will understand the order I have taken in building this bike...I have had this engine since I was a child and we have been riding togethor off and on throughout my life however for the last few years she has been sitting under my workbench patiently awaiting a restoration.

I decided to start restoring her several months ago and my original plan was to paint and engrave her and return her to a mostly stock mild cafe style bike but after I started restoring her I decided to reverse port her and build a full custom bike instead. I am hand building the parts for the bike itself as well as the engines internals, header, intake manifolds, etc. which is very time consuming.

As for the engine running, she will very soon. To start and properly tune the engine I needed the exhaust and to build the exhaust I needed the bike so I started working towards building the rolling chassis and as I wanted the rear pipes of the exhaust to flow with the seat I had to build the tail section. As of today I am finished with the basic design of the exhaust, it still needs a little welding and smoothing but I am happy with the design so I can start working towards building other parts.

This is not a conventional build where I started with a stock engine and built a bike around it, as it is a full custom build it was necessary for me to build the bike so that I could build and fit all of the other parts.

This was not a planned out build where I drew a picture of a bike and said this is what I am building, I am building each part as I get there.

Welcome to the site and I look forward to seeing your builds.

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

This bike confuses me. I really can't wait to see it completed because I think at that moment it's going to "click" for me. It's so different from what I'm used to that I'm having trouble seeing where it's going, but I really want it to get there.

Hurry up man!!

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

I decided that the exhaust was too long so today I shortened it and I really think it looks a lot better!

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

Those pipes look great brother, but what about burn marks on the tail. Aren't you afraid they will mess up your artwork on the seat or are you just going to implement them as a design feature? ;)

Well well well,....we have another one.

Do you not think Brother Joe hasnt given that some thought?

I think this one is just asking a valid question. And you're right, I'm sure he has.

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

I am not the most vocal poster on the site, prefer to lurk and pick up tips from you guys.

However I had to post on this bike, I love it, it is just so extreme in every aspect. Every time I see a new post on the thread I race toward it to see what updates there has been.

Top build and top work Joeyputt, you have me in awe of your obvious talents.

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

c'mon guys lets not attack everyone that ask a question on this thread.

joe, bike looks so awesome. i have to shut down my laptop every time i look at it just to let the drool dry so i dont fry it lol. keep it up man. you got quite the following on this one

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

What I love about this build is that it's pushing my boundaries of what I think I like outward and upward. There are several aspects of this build that I'd never do to one of my bikes. However, when I see it all together and with the workmanship Joe is putting into it I can't help but rethink my position on certain things.

For example...Joey says he's going to put a wooden tail on the bike. My first thought is "WTF, that'll look like crap!". Then I see it and damn...looks sweet! Joe's vision for his bike is way outside of my own so I'm just sitting back, watching, and learning. At the end of the day there will likely be a few things that aren't to my personal taste, but it's one hell of a build and many thanks to Joe for sharing it here with us.

Keep doing what your doing Joe and pay no attention to any detractors. They, like me, probably just can't see the finished product in their minds yet.

Nail on the head...My position exactly...Bravo

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

Thank you all Brothers, as always your support means more to me than you could ever know.

I do not mind people asking questions and I definately enjoy all of the feedback, we all do not have the same tastes, and we all have many different ideas (which I love hearing by the way!), however we all share the same common bond of having a love affair with the motorcycle whatever brand, color, or shape it may be.

As for the exhaust heat and seat question, it is a good question and is one that I would ask as well if someone else was building it the way that I am. I am going to skin the whole bottom of the tail section with a piece of polished aluminum, I plan on counter sinking it into the bottom so that it will be flush with the outside edges of the seat, I believe that it will offer good heat protection for the wood and it will be easy to keep clean as well.

Please understand that none of the parts I have built are completed, I am building and fitting all of the parts and then I am going to come back and finish all of the details, painting, and polishing.

There truly are a lot of talented builders with build threads here on DTT and I greatly appreciate all of you taking the time to follow and comment on mine, I am grateful to have so many good Brothers.

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

One thing to keep in mind, joey: Aluminum is an EXCELLENT thermal conductor (second only to silver and copper and on par with gold). It may not offer the kind of heat protection for which you are aiming.

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

Brother Sonreir I wanted it mainly just to keep direct heat off of the wood on the bottom, there is about a inch space between the largest piece of pipe and the tail section so I actually do not think the heat wil be too bad.

Is there a different material that you recommend?

I still have some welding and smoothing to do but here is another photo of the exhaust system after I shortened it.

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

Thank you for the recommendations and the links, the last stage of the pipe is the closest and it is roughly five inches long and made of stainless steel.

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

joey,

I'm not sure of the other materials you have planned for the build, but you can consider bronze. I think it would look nice as an accent along with the engraving you've already done on the engine. It has a thermal conductivity rating of 15 BTU/h°F as opposed to aluminum's 140 or so. Stainless steel between 10 and 25 depending on the alloy. Lead is also quite low, but I'm not sure how keen you are to work with it. Brass is around 60 or 70 on the scale and tin comes in at just under 40.

There's a complete list here: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/thermal-conductivity-metals-d_858.html

Re: DWMS RACING CB550F SUPER REVERSE PORT! NEW PHOTOS!

Love the direction this exhaust has taken.

I'm a newb to exhaust construction and the reason for the step is to help create backpressure? Not to take you away from building but could you enlighten us on the theory. I'm not doubting that it works, as you've said you've used before but I'm interested in how it works.

Jay

I've been showing all these store bought harley guys here at work what chopping truly is with your pics.
