As far as rotating the axle adjustment the other way, we tried that but there's still the probability that the chain will slap the brace :'( and I don't want to see that happen!
Downsizing the rear wheel sprocket is a possibility, but I can't do the same with the countershaft sprocket as it's a special order item because of the need for a 5/8" offset. That won't work.
I think the tensioner idea is the way to go! Now to find the ideal tensioner!

This will last alllooottt longer and be much qiieter than your current set up. They are available in many diameters depending on year and model, and for only about $20... Can't go wrong.
